X2 3800 AM2 - Temp question?

Just put together a new machine and wanted to get overclockin, but my temps seem very off from what i have been reading. Its a 3800 X2 65W chip, and i'm getting 47-51C idle temps. Is this normal or should i be looking for a new HS/F? I did have a bit of trouble getting the heatsink on at first. Clips wouldn't snap into place. Full specs below.

Case : Antec P180 (all three fans are on)
MB : Asus M2N32-Deluxe

Everything appears to okay in the BIOS rev. 1001. not overclocked at all.

What temp monitoring software are you using??? What OS...

I have the Crosshair with a Zalman 9550AM2...

3600+ OC to 2.6 and have temps at 40 idle at 58 at load...


ALso make sure the voltage is right.. the auto feature of Asus seems to pump more V then it needs to. that might give you a higher temp... Make sure cool and quiet or a "smart fan" option is not enabled...

using CoreTemp .95 on Vista. Same readings in BIOS.

The voltage is set to 1.200. Offset voltage is off.

Going to remove the thermal paste and replace it with some AS5 tomorrow. Hope thats the problem.

Well make sure the temp readings are actually right first. Touch your heatsink and see how hot it really is. My 2.8GHz X2 idles ~32, load all the way up to 65 on orthos which is high.

its warm, but not hot. I took off the heatsink and noticed some scratches. not deep, but there.

Those temps seem a bit high to me, but it may be what you can get depending on your heatsink fan.

I have an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe, a 90W AM2 3800+ X2, and my idle temps in the BIOS are around 34-38°C and peak at around 48-49°C. I'm using a Zalman 9500 on Silent Mode to get that (ca. 1355 rpm). The paste I use is Arctic Silver Ceramique. This is all in an Antec P180 in a room that is around 72°F.

Your temps aren't alarming, but just seem a bit high to me. If you are using a smaller heat sink, though, that may be about as good as it can do without strapping on a noisy high rpm fan. Hopefully re-seating the heatsink, as suggested by others, will drop those temps for you.

I have the same setup with a m32ne. My temps are always way off, I get different readings in different programs.

Currently I'm at... 71C dual load lol (1.45v 2.6ghz). perfectly stable, so I'm not complaining.

Could my 8800gts be adding the extra temps?

When I boot into windows my temps just start rising. System Idle is at 99 and the temps keep rising. Removing the side panel on the case only drops them by a degree or two.

Yes, check the voltage settings! My 4400+ x2 defaulted to 1.4v on the motherboard. I had to check the specs to see what it is really suppose to run at, it was 1.3v - 1.35v.

That can make a BIG difference in temps!

core 0 idles at 23? thats odd because thats what room temp is about.....

core 1 idles at around 30-35

on load core 0 is 41 while core 1 is 55

any way core 1's reading is wrong??

i'm sure i applied as5 right.... so i'm going to blame a faulty sensor or a bad IHS mount...


is 55 safe for dual cores?

my old single core 3700 maxed at 45
