x1950xtx overclock?

This video card you selected for overclocking in ATI Tool does not seem to be used by windows
Visual testing has been disabled
I have a X1950XTX 512mb DDR4

i was trying to use ATI tool to overclock it some and the above statement is what i got when i clicked to find Max Memory
what is going on there
i tried using the Catalyst control panel also, move the sliders up and nothing happens the vpu clock and memory stay the same even though i requested more??
 
If you have an ATI Crossfire board it is probably detecting that chipset. You need to change the device in ATI Tool.

Personally I gave up on ATI Tool with my X1900XT, he had too many problems working out the X1k cards. I use Driver Lever OCing in ATI Tray tools and it works fantastic autoswitching to 3d clocks and even have a higher stable overclock than in ATI Tool.

Also in CCC overdrive the clocks won't change till you play in 3D. That was the biggest problem I had with ATI Tool, it did not detect the 2d/3d clock switching very well. Neither did ATI Tray tools till he added driver level overclocking, no need to disable ATI's poller program since the driver lever OCing uses it.
 
so your saying you just use the catalyst control panel and overclock with ATI Overdrive?
how do i know how high to take it so ill be stable?

Just run the automated clock configuration tool and you should be able to get 695/1098 which is the max it'll let you do I believe.

what is a good way to test these setting to make sure they are stable
i run 3dmark 06, i just run default setting in that program,, would this be a good enough test?
or is there another way to test for being stable,,,
sorry to be a pain
 
just run a game like Fear or COH and if something screws up lower your clocks but ati's clock configuration utility usually produces stable clocks so there should be no problem.
 
ok ill take a look at it,, next question if i do use the ATI Catalyst Control Panel ATI Overdrive,
it has my settings as Current VPU Clock as 506 and requested as 695
Current Memory Clock as 594 and requested as 1071
so not playing games or anything it is just running at stock basically, but when i load a game up such as Microsoft Flight Sim X, it switches to the requested speeds?

ATI X1K cards added this concept of 2d/3d clock speeds to conserve on power and heat when the graphic punch isn't needed. This caused some difficulty for the guru's who create these aftermarket overclocking utilities. Video seems to screw them up, so I noticed in games like Company of Heroes where the cutscenes were being detected as Video, the card was switching to 2d clocks when it really shouldn't. Also they have problems with PowerDVD specifically, some people were reported crashes or black screens when using ATI Tool. I crashed alot trying to use that tool, but it was when I discovered the Video problem that I decided to check out Tray Tools. The initial version I downloaded worked ok, but it was when he added driver level overclocking that I think it became a great tool. It allows me to set the 3D clocks, voltage and fan speed I want and uses the ATI poller program for clock switching which works perfectly.

I have 2 3d clocks profiles. One that ATI Tray Tool artifact tester says in my most stable combined clocks and it is also quiet since I just set the fan to a constant 68% in that profile. Those clocks are 655/819 (my stock 3d clocks are 621/724). Then I also have a 3d Max profile which is set and 100% fan speed and 675/819 clocks. It was a lot of different testing that came up with that. But the Artifact tester in the tool does not like that combination. Still I have been using it for a couple weeks and I have so far seen no problems with those clocks.

The highest memory clocks I ever got in ATI Tool was 792. I think that had do to with the programmers most stable clocks and not mine.
 
ATi Tray Tools will allow a higher memory clock because it automatically increases the latency as you raise the speed. The max overclock achievable with ATiTool generally gives the same performance as the max overclock in ATT. I can get ust over 900MHz out of my XT with tray tools, but a run through 3DMark'06 gives almost exactly the same score as setting 846MHz with ATiTool (actually got a very slightly higher score with the ATiTool o/c, but the difference was within the margin of normal variation between runs).
 
That makes sense, since I really did not notice a big improvement in 3dmark other than what could be associated with the Core speed. My reason mostly for using ATI Tray Tools is accurate auto clock switching and stability. But ATI Tool as progressed of course since I stopped using it, so he could have figured all the same stuff out.
