I am in the midst of choosing one of these 2 cards. Yes I know everyone will say go 8800gts but I am probably 6months to a year away from that and besides I can use that in my 2nd machine. So between these 2 which would you go with?

Also if a game is "sponsored" by nvidia with the nvidia the way its meant to be played logo does that mean it should be optomized for nvidia?

Cant believe that I'm saying this but; Go with the X1950XTX instead because the image quality is better than the 7950GT and you can also have HDR and anti aliasing on at the same time.

is there even a comparison?

The X1950XTX is ati's current top card vs the 7950gt midrange card.

Faster, better image quality on ati's part.

The only reason I would go with the 7950gt is because of single slot, or you dont have that beefy of a power supply. And maybe the drivers are cleaner and simply without having to use modded drivers.

Those two cards are in completely different classes. The X1950 XTX should be considerably more expensive than the 7950GT, and also much faster. If you're looking at the X1950 XTX, try the 8800GTS. Otherwise, the 7950GT is a good deal if you can get it in the low $200's.

i would go for the bfg since it has lifetime warranty. newegg currently has the evga 7950gt for ~200AR IIRC.

The X1950XTX is much better, but the cheapest one I can find on Newegg is for $360, and for that price you can get a 8800GTS, which is much better.
