Ok so here goes, recently my good old X800 Pro decided to smolder and die and of course i had to replace it. Not wanting to waste money on a new PCIe rig i decide to stay AGP for a while longer.

I managed to find a reasonably priced X1950XT on ebay. It arrives and everything is ok apart from being a pain to get in my case. Of course i try out my new sm 3.0 capable card with bioshock, i played through it ok with mediocre performance but playing many other games i start to notice that my fps is rather low and performance in some cases seems worse than with my X800.

For example in TF2 i get very low fps(10-30) @1024x768 2xAA 8xAF. I tried lowering all settings, running it in dx8 mode and overclocked the card (675/750) and I'm still getting bad fps in relatively empty low ping servers. I've tried different driver sets, searching on google defragmenting, formatting and to no avail. I've posted my rig below and some 3Dmark 2006 results if that helps. If anyone could offer some suggestions on what to do i'd appreciate it. Also i'm running XP SP2.

You stated that you've reformated, as well as tried re-installing drivers, maybe it's actual a processor bottleneck since you're cpu limited at that resolution. That's the only thing I could thing of, the 1950xt is much more powerful than the x800. Try increasing the resolution.

Make sure to install your motherboard's chipset drivers to take full advantage of that 8x AGP.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Blue i tried what you said and was playing at 1280x960 2xAA 8xAF and performance was 17-47fps most of the time which of course was better than before, just curious as to how this works since i would have thought a higher res would have lower performance?

It's still not as smooth is it safe to say the main culprit is my cpu?

I think you are cpu bottlenecked. My old rig, (an opty 175 and 1900xt), gets better frames than that @ 1600x1200 in TF2

Your cpu is doing all of the work at 1024x768. Increasing your resolution puts more strain on your gpu and relieves some of the load from your cpu.P4 are terrible for gaming. I suggest your start saving for a new pc.
