Hi! I'm going to upgrade my video card in two weeks. My current hardware is. Opteron 165 (dual core) @ 2.56ghz, 2GB ODZ PC4000, X1600pro. Should I buy X1950pro for 1649 SEK ($235) or X1950XT for 2295 SEK ($327). The 8800GTS is too expensive, the cheapest one costs 4095 SEK ($585) and I don't think the R600 will be any cheaper. So it's between X1950 pro and XT. The pro is not only cheaper, but also has better cooling (Arctic Cooling Accelero X2). How much better is the XT? It's very hard to find any comparisons between X1950pro and XT.

Thanks for the advice.

btw: SEK is Swedish currency for those of you who wants to know.

edit: As is the custom in Sweden, all prices are including the 25 % VAT that is why it's more expensive than in the US.

Man that european VAT is a killer. I get all up in arms if sales tax gets above 8.5%, myself.

Anyways...The XT is faster than the PRO, but in my opinion, the difference is not worth the added cash. The PRO is a very strong card, for its price.

The X1950 PRO has 12 pixel pipelines, is clocked at 580 MHz, and comes with 1.4 GHz Memory.
The X1950 XT has 16 pixel pipeslines, is clocked at 625 MHz, and comes with 1.8 GHz Memory.

Though it looks like it should be at least 33 percent faster, in fact it is not. Performance does not scale as well on the high-end as it does on the midrange and low end. Also, don't forget overclocking capability. If I had to guess, I'd say the XT will give you framerates about 16-18 % above what a PRO will give you. That is just a guess, mind you, as I've never actually used the XT variety of the X1950 series (though it is essentially the same GPU as an X1900 XT, but with a faster GPU clock and faster memory).

Thanks, I'll probably get the X1950pro then. 16-18% more power doesn't seem worth it when it's 39% more expensive. I had a 7800GT before (which broke and the two replacements I got were both broken to so I gave up on that card and bought X1600pro as a temporary solution) how much better would X1950pro compared to 7800GT? (If it is better)

I know we pay a lot of VAT, but at least we get free collage and health care etc, so it's not all that bad. :)

How much better than a 7800 GT? I have no idea. I've never used a 7800 GT before.
