X1950pro install issues

I'm having a hell of a time trying to get this driver installed. Any ideas? Here's the situation...

New build. XP w/ SP2. Intel 6750, 2Gb ram, Corsair hx520. I load up XP all is fine and dandy. I load all the drivers except the video and all is fine. At this point I have no other software installed and don't even have it hooked to the internet to make sure no patches come through or viruses/spyware. I load the driver from the disc that came with the video card and reboot as asked. When it comes back, I get the XP splash screen and then it goes black.

The only way I can get it back is to boot in safe mode, delete the video card and then I can boot normally again. I've tried the drivers on the disc and the latest from ATI. I've tried just the driver and the whole package with the Catalyst Control Center. Both do the same thing. I've done a full format and reinstall of Windows as well and it doesn't help.

I read that this card needs .net installed first. So I did that, and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas? Is it an SP2 issue?
 
Is this AGP or PCIX? I had a problem with my AGP version and 7.8's it just would not work, the 7.9 are back to normal. Also I've been told and foruntatly I was fine but that the card needs lots of power, I think they said 30A on the 12V+ How much do you have?
 
It's the PCIE version. I don't know what I have for power exactly. But from what I've ready the Corsair hx520 should be able to handle it easily as I've heard of people using the 8800gts on it along with a lot more stuff.
 
download drive cleaner and remove driver using the program.see if this helps
 
yeah, that's what I'm going to try next. I didn't figure it was necessary since it was a fresh install before.

But I have all 3 .NET frameworks downloaded (1.1, 2.0, and 3.0) I'll do the driver cleaner, load those, then try the latest driver again (7.10).
 
Wow three 12v rails, well you should be fine, just make sure everyting isn't on the same rail.

The only other thing I can think of is if like with my monitor it likes to go directly to its highests resolution when its finally starts up. Try out some newer drivers I see this is your plan.
 
Ok, multiple tries with driver cleaner and manual uninstalls and registry cleaning has not helped. I've tried the last 3 driver versions, 7.10, 7.9, and 7.8 and no luck.

Everytime the driver loads, I reboot and it goes to a black screen, no signal, after the XP slash screen. I don't have another monitor that I can try. I'm back in the stone age myself and this is a build for a family member. Any other suggestions? I'm about to say screw it, return this card and go Nvidia.

Maybe I'll bring the machine to work tomorrow. I have some Quadro cards I can put in there and another monitor that would work. That might narrow things down.

But any other suggestions would be a big help. Would uninstalling SP2 be beneficial?
 
I did some searching on AMD/ATI's sight. As of now, they state there is no fix for this issue. Nice. I sent in a ticket to them, but I doubt I get a decent answer. Odds are I'll return the thing. I should have researched this thing more or went with my guy and got an Nvidia card. But it sounds like this is a nice card, when it works.

Any suggestions would be great. I really don't want to return this thing. When someone pays you $1500 to build a computer, you kind of want to deliver it in a timely fashion.
 
Looks like a monitor issue. When you install a driver it changes the resolution and frequency for you. Try just going to safe mode and change it 1024x768 @ 60Hz. Or like someone already mentioned before try a different monitor. Seems as video card is fine and driver works. You didn't need driver cleaner....

Nope, changing that doesn't help. Thanks for the suggestion though. ATI does say that this happens with SOME monitors. I'll try out a Dell 20" that I have at work tomorrow and see if that comes up.
 
yea if you try a dell 20" you'll know for sure since it can handle up to 1680x1050.
 
Ok, now I'm not sure what to think. I brought the thing into work, plugged it in and it is now working. Maybe it's a power issue at my house or something. The only thing different are the power cords and the keyboard and mouse.

Odd. But at least it's working. I just hope it stays that way.

I have to ask this as I can't understand the fascination with Driver Cleaner, how exactly would this help the OP if he's already formatted and reinstalled Windows and that hasn't made any difference?

OP, does it boot in VGA mode? Also, when the screen goes black, does the PC actually continue booting?
 
Mobo is ga-p31-ds3l. No it wouldn't boot in VGA mode. I assume that the machine still booted after the screen went black, it didn't shut off.

I didn't think Driver cleaner would make a difference, but since I tried the install a few times, it was worth a shot. But like I said, now everything seems to be up and running fine.

Well, not the onboard sound driver went goofy, but I'm downloading the latest driver for that now.
