X1900XTX temps...

Hi all...

I have noticed that my X1900XTX gets over 100 c when playing FEAR.

Is this normal? I tried a Zalman VF700-CU and the temps still get close to 100 c.

I have 2 120mm fans...one in the front pulling air in...one in the back blowing out.

I would think the airflow is fine...although the vent in the front of the case is small...maybe not enough air is being pulled in.

Would running the X1900XTX at those temps above be harmful to the card?
 
Ditto. I would like to hear some input here as well. I can't seem to find any reference as to what temperature equals a tragic meltdown on these cards.

What are your ambient temps? Are you running with your case closed or open? Are you overclocking / overdriving?

Things I've read elsewhere indicate that the thermal paste used on these cards is crap. People claim to have had major temperature drops by scraping off the junk that coms stock and replacing it with new paste
 
Case is closed. I'm going to try and run it with the side off.

Maybe the Thernaltake Swing case I have this housed in is part of the problem. The front intake is very small. It could be not enough air is getting sucked in.

The temp of the room was 74F or about 24 c...the wife was baking and the stove was heating up the whole house.
 
My temps went up after removing the stock paste, polishing and replacing with AS5.

The paste used on my card looked quite good (silver, nicely applied), card is a Connect3D.

Still waiting on my RD580 board and Cool-matic to sort it out properly. :)

Your temps do sound high, try installing ATI Tool and adjust the fan to run a bit higher, e.g. 50% over 70c and 80% over 80c etc, and see what happens.
 
Mine runs about mid 50's at idle and while under full load playing CS:S it gets around low to mid 80's and the fan is running at 100%

I have 2 exhaust fans sucking hot air out of the case in the rear right above the vid. card.

I haven't done anything to the card other then raising the fan speed.

check,,,but remember it will only be 100% when gaming...and i presonally wouldnt like to run my card at over 100 degrees c, whether its a 6600gt or a x1900xt...

and it should be hotter after the as5 u need to wait for it to go everywhere properly...
 
These cards are just plain loud and hot, I have never had my temps go higher than ~90c. When I got the card I tested for noise and temps then I applied some AS5...not much of a change. I think I am prolly going H20 but I am not too sure, it all depends on what zalman comes out with for an aftermarket cooler.
 
100C is way too hot. especially for a 90nm chip. I suggest making sure the heatsink is making proper contact. Tighten the screws if necessary. Make sure the fan is running 100% via the CCC. Opening the side pannel with that card is not a good idea. Especially if you didn't like the noise before. Imagine with the side pannel off. Geez :confused:
 
I believe ATI tool or CCC gets it done. I've read so in other posts. It might be ati tool. Somebody... Anybody... :D
 
OK...here is what I did.

I took off the stock heatsink/fan. Cleaned off the AS5 that was on there. Applied an even thinner coat of AS5. I put the stock heatsink/fan back on...making sure it was tight.

I installed RivaTuner and got it to recognize the X1900XTX. I went in and check the temps. It was sitting idle at 55. OK...time to fire up 3Dmark 2001 and loop the Nature test at 1600x1200 with the highest options turned on for 10 runs.

RivaTuner has a nice option where it will overlay the GPU temp...the temps began to rise. I also turned on the log to monitor temps. The temps went up to 90. This was with done letting the X1900XTX control the speed of the fan...which it looked like was running at 27%

I then changed the fan speed in RivaTuner to 60% and did the test again. The temps dropped to 85. I set the fan for 100%...way too loud if you ask me...and the temps dropped to 77.

I also did the above tests with the case side off...the temps did not change.

Time to fire up FEAR. I set the fan back to 60% and played for close to an hour. The temps did not rise above 92 and hovered most of the time around 87. Never did they come close to 100. I tried Crashday and Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and the temps were lower...no higher than 75.

I think I may have had too much AS5 on and probably the heatsink/fan was not contacting the core like it should.

Thanks for everyones input on this. BTW...this card is killer. Well worth the $549 I paid for it. :)
 
A run through 05 with stock settings, clocks, fan speeds and AS5 gives me 89c monitored by ATI Tool as MAX. If I go 50%, it keeps it down to 77c. 100% will yield 67c.

But even 50% is pushin' it in the noise dept. I just ordered this from newegg. Here's to hoping it doesn't suck, hhaaha!

It's possible that the shim on the card is crooked. 100c full load seems like quite a bit. I slapped a VF700 on my card and it doesn't get past 60, others have reported that the vf700 doesn't quite cut it. I grew tired of the stock fan after only two days. The VF900cu should be here any day now, and i've heard good things about that.
 
Mine is idling at 49-50* and it never breaks 70* load....But I have it set in so the fan hits 80-90% when temps break the 65* barrier.
 
I plan on setting my fan to around 70-85% at ALL TIMES with RivaTuner... once my X1900 gets here on friday.

if you keep the fan at stock speeds its fairly quite ,

the only thing that is annoying is when it changes the speeds ,

the whine could drive some poeple crazy ,

i didnt like that myself but i was gonna water cool it anyway ,

im using DDMaze4
idle 33* , load 710/845 1.45v 37*

i overclock it even higher sometimes but usually game at the settings above ,

so ,im really happy with the way my water cooling setup is performing ,

and im glad i got rid of the fan noise

I think the best way to describe the noise is an old CD-rom turning at full speed.
 
Well even Ati told me on the phone that running the fan at 50% at all times isn't bad, so I think I am going to stop worrying.

keep it around 30% on idle and 100% when gaming becau wont wont be able to hear it whilst gaming...or just get sapphires new blizzard cooled one :p
 
I've got mine situated like this:

That way there's really only 3 speeds. Silent, quiet, and barely tolerable.

it gets hot enough to need that fan set a little bit higher than that, one you fire up a game that thing is prolly going to get to 80c very easily, try setting it to speed up to60% at say 60c then 70% at 70, at 90, go to "maximum speed Mr Sulu".
 
3d2k5 gets it up to about 80c with that setup. Which is def tolerable for now.
