x1900xtx random reboots

I was playing Oblivion the other night and my system hung and restarted. I figured maybe it was just a gremlin or soemthing. reboot, go back into the game, low and behold half hour in it restarts again. Now, I realized that during boot up, the 1900's fan revs up to full speed for a few seconds, and then goes back to normal operation. What I have realized is that never once during any of my games has the fan gotten to full speed, or near full speed. Would it be possible that the card is overheating before the fan kicks in? The card has acted a bit iffy since I installed it. The overdrive feature just doesn't want to work, overclocking through other programs just freezes up ym system. Here are my system specs:

Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz, x1900xtx, 3 sata drives, intel badaxe mobo, zalman 9500 on the cpu, all in an Antec P180 case using an antec truepower 550w.

You might have a faulty card...
If the card was overheating badly, you would probably notice artifacts in the games you were playing, before anything like a reboot, actually happened. But if you think that's the case, check the state of the card's fan.
But this leads me to a question: Does this happen in other games ?
 
Well, no artifacts as of yet. I've been playing other games like UT2004, CS, HL2, DoD, CoD2, stuff like that, and I haven't had a problem as of yet. Makes me wonder what could possibly be wrong with my Oblivion game that would cause this out of nowhere. Funny, it wasn't even an intense part of the game when it froze, i was looking at a door and was about to open it and bam, restart. Back to the fans though, it still doesn't get near 100% speed, and I've tried using atitool and tray tools, but niether one recognizes the x1900xtx to be able to change speeds. Also tried SpeedFan, and that doesn't show the card either, just my cpu and hard drives, etc.

I'm thinking of maybe unloading the 1900xtx to a friend and shell out a few extra bucks and get a 1950. Eventually i wanna do that whole boundless gaming thing, with one card doing physics, and 2 dx10 cards rendering. But thats a while off.
 
I was thinking that at first too. I mean, I looked at the voltages and the 12v rail is consistent. Its an antec true power 550, I mean, the thing is rated to perform great with a x-fire system, and i've only got a single card. Granted when i ordered from newegg, i thought it was modular as well, but the one i got wasn't modular. Maybe they gave me the wrong one? I dunno...

550W are enough for a X1900 XTX. It could be a problem, if somehow he got a faulty one.
