I am currently running a X850XT-PE on a 400w Thermaltake psu. i have a AMD 4000+, 2 gb pc3200 ram, 2x 120gb hdd's, 2 dvd burners, and 3 case fans.

I was thinking of upgrading to a X1900XTX. i saw that they recommended a 450w psu for this card. my X850XT-PE has been running on my 400w psu for some time now without any problems. they recommend a 450w psu for that card also. what do you guys think...can it handle a X1900XTX?

also, will i see big improvements buy purchasing a X1900XTX over my current X850xt-pe?

the 850 is just like a 6800 ultra. you'll see a huge difference.

and you ARE going to need a more powerful psu, why not get a 550w or more?

It depends on what how much 12 volt amp is rated on your power supply... Not the wattage...

While 1900xtx eats more power than the 850xt pe...

You need 30 amp 12 volt for a loaded system to run the xtx... Most 400 watt power supply don't have that high of an amp on 12 volt rail... You probably need 450 watt minimum...

I would give your original PSU a try first being replacing it.

You will definitely notice the performance increase especially if you run at resolution of 1280 x 1024 or higher with AA+AF .
