X1900XT using TV

Hey for fun I hooked my X1900XT up to my 40" widescreen Panasonic LCD TV. When I did I get a nice black strip that goes all around the boarder. About 1" at the top and bottom, and about 1.25-1.5" on the sides. Is this normal? Also what resolution would you suggest?
 
I think you can use a program called powerstrip.
Never used it personally, but mates have...
