X1900XT noise levels?

I'm looking at the X1900XT for my next build and I'm curious how loud the stock cooler is.

The setup will be in an Antec P180B which I'm told are very good at dampening sound. However, I've also heard that the stock coolers on the X1900 series are notoriously bad when it comes to sound output.

My goal is to have this build be as quite as possible and I really don't want to have the gpu responsible for the most sound in the entire box.

I know other alternatives such as 3rd party coolers exist, but I'd prefer to not modify the card. I don't overclock, but I do game quite a bit (hence the card) so any opinions you can give about lessening the noise if it is an issue or whether or not you notice it would be great.
 
I put Artic Silver 5 on mine, and that helped drop the temps a lot. (I'm sure other thermal paste would as well) So, the fan doesn't spin up nearly as often. I only hear it spin up every so often when a part of the game I am playing gets quiet. At 100% though, this thing is far too loud. Thank god mine is normally spinning just a little above idle speed. The only time it gets close to 100% speed is at computer boot up, before the fan speed control has loaded up.

Would I go back and get a different card because of the X1900XT's potential noise problem. LOL I wouldn't even think about it. ;) Once you start gaming with it, you will forget that you were worried about noise.
 
Noise is why I bought the the HIS IceQ3 X1900XT. My rig is pretty darn quiet.

I would wait and find out how the X1950XTX is, the cooler looks really similiar to the HIS cooler, so it may be just as quiet.
 
I have the same set-up.

I think the 1900xt noise is acceptable playing games, the problem is the fan spinning up/down. You don't notice a noise as much if it's constant, but it is the spinning up that bugs me. So in Oblivion every time you go to the inventory screen or read a book it spins down (nothing to do) and as soon as you start walking around again it spins back up. So I use ATI Tray Tool before I start playing to put it on 60% or so. I have never heard it go 100% in a game yet. That really is friggin' loud.
 
Yep the spinning up/down is the problem with X1900/X1800 cards. Solutions are luckily many, you can change the fan settings via 3rd party program, change the whole heatsink or buy a card which alrdy has a better cooling solution.
