x1900GT with artifact problem

Hey Mates,

Anyway, I picked up an x1900GT for cheap to play around with. I put it in and began to test it out. Upon boot the card shows 4 artifacts in the form if a few pixels in random colors about one inch from the bottom of the screen. It shows this on both monitors, in the same exact location ruling out the monitor. (I have a dead pixel on one monitor, it's not what I'm talking about.)

I used AtiTool to scan for artifacts at default settings and it went berserk. I started the artifact scanner and it had a crapload of artifacts. I would take a screen shot and upload it if I had a print screen key.(Work around?). It kept giving me the windows error tone every few seconds as more and more yellow artifacts showed up.

I tried cleaning out the heatsink on the video card. I tried opening the case. The temperatures weren't too extreme(I don't remember exact numbers, sorry.) I have two x1900GTs, and the one I use mainly works just fine at all the temperatures AtiTool showed.

What's the deal??

Is there maybe a capacitor or something missing?

Have you tried flashing the BIOS to default? Maybe somebody flashed a different BIOS or an edited BIOS with bad memory timings to it.

If not, it is faulty.
 
Mine does the same shit but not as bad. In really newer games that are more demanding it artifacts like crazy after a few minutes. I took the heatsink off and cleaned it up and reseated it but it's still going nuts. I figure I might just get me a new 9600GT now.
 
I have one of these and they get very hot, almost like an x1900xt with a single slot fan. My card regularly goes over 90c but I have yet to get any artifacts. Like the other poster, I reseated the cooler with AS5 but didn't help the temps much. It needed a 2 slot cooler IMO.
