Hey, I just spent about $40 upgrading from my x1800xt flashed to PE speeds to a x1900xt. With everything at stock speeds the x1900xt only beat the x1800xt pe by 500 points on 3dMark 05... I was expecting a bit more than this. I know I can OC the x1900xt more, but I could have also OCed the x1800xt pe more... I am going to defrag again and try to run as clean as possible to bump up the score a bit but that is usually at max 200 points... This just goes to show me how good the x1800xt pe was... Talk about bang for the buck..

Any thoughts?

Do you mean x800xtpe I don't remember them making a xtpe version of the x1000 series I thought it was xtx instead of xtpe. Anyways if it only cost you 40$ to go from that x1800 to x1900 then your good and don't let 3dmark decieve you just cause theres only a marginal increase doesn't mean its not much better.

a) you should prolly have informed yourself before doing the update

b) how often do you play benchmark?

c) sorry to sound harsh but you simply paid $50 for a small increase. And that's what you got. Same as upgrading from a 7800GTX to a 7900GT. Some people did it and were dissatisfied...... <shrug>

I think it was Sapphire that made a x1800xt pe. There werent that many of them although all xt's should be able to flash to the bios no problem.

I actually have an x1900xtx on the way as well... I'll put that underwater and really push it.
I only benchmark when I get something new.
I figure the $50 now will help me get to 2008 without another upgrade. *crosses fingers* (I will be playing on 1360x768 for a long time to come)

Well, for that resolution it really doesn't matter which of the 2 cards you use....

Anyways the X1900XT will do fine.

You won't see a dramatic increase in benchmarks, you'll see it in really shader heavey games

the X1800XT PE was never officially released by Sapphire although they did release the bios and just about everyone with the X1800XT was able to flash to the PE speeds

also i'd say you have a great card, how much did you pay for it? if you are looking for a card to hold over for 2+ years i'd recommend the mid range cards (7600GT or the X1900GT) for that and just upgrade yearly

How come can't I find anything about a XTPE BIOS on sapphire's site? Where can I DL it? MVKtech.com doesn't seem to have it.

I am going to make it till Jan. 2008 or longer with my current setup. Then I'll either completely overhaul it or just get a new video card. Like I said before, I have a x1900xtx coming and am going to throw it under water to squeeze every bit of performance out of it before I upgrade again.

You got more out of the deal than 3dmark05 is going to show you.
With Oblivion and upcoming shader intensive games, the difference will be more apparent.
Not sure how you did it, but for only $40 out of pocket, it was a good upgrade.
I went from an X1800XL to an X1900XT and spent about $160 and believe it was worth it.

XL is not as good as the XT - I think there's actually a pretty big difference in core/memory clocks.

I have an x1800XT - the XT performs well in Oblivion with stock clocks - with HDR at 1280x1024 no AA and 16x AF it manages to hold 30+ FPS most of the time outside (with a Core2Duo helping it out slightly).

I guess $40 was ok, but I don't think it was required yet. But yeah you secured a computer for a long time. I'm hoping my GPU will secure me until a good affordable DX10 card is out for around $200.

My XL was running at 607/702 so it was pretty close to a stock 256mb XT.
It made up probably 80% of the difference between an XL and 256mb XT.
At any rate, the difference in Oblivion between the old card and the new X1900XT
is substantial. I suspect the difference on your system would be almost as impressive.
Of course an XT can overclock past 625/750, but I think most of the gains in Oblivion are from the extra pixel shaders and not so much the extra 75mhz core & memory speed I got from upgrading the XL.

So what are the PE speeds? I have a MSI x1800xt 512mb and thinking about doing the flash.

The upgrade from the X18 to X19 is a dramatic one, and to me that would be worth every penny even though only 500 extra 3dmarks. In games the performance is alot greater.

I couldn't find the x1800xt pe bios on sapphire's site, where did you guys snatch them at?

If anyone wants the x1800xt PE bios from sapphire, pm me your email address and i'll attach it for you. I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR USE OF IT.

by the way - Seafuri, what was your 3dmark05 score?

Alternately, You can get it from techpowerup.com

My x1800xt pe score was 9300 and my x1900xt was 9800...

This was with a opty 165 1.8ghz and 2gb of PC3200 at 3-4-3-8...

OCed I expect a much better score, but I like to be reminded of how much it helps

:D

yeah your score will scale with cpu speed in an appreciable way

no its a program called atiwinflash that runs from winders

Ya, you're completely CPU limited, OC that Opty to 2.5+ (why else did you get it) and then the difference between the two cards will increase, Or check the difference in 06

I'm completely stable at 3.0ghz with 1.5v... I just wanted to keep the cpu at stock so I could see the actual difference in the cards.

Whats the best way to make sure it's actually running the PE bios after the flash? Unless I'm missing something, the clocks didn't change in CCC..

I turn on some sort of monitoring program like riva tuner or ATT... That way I can make sure the clocks change for 3d and change to PE speeds...

In CCC, under Information Center -> Graphics Hardware -> there are 3 lines for BIOS. it should change to *something 103 something* if the flash took effect. Other than that, do as above stated, or, just 3dmark before and after.

yea it went perfect... Riva tuner detected the correct speeds and 3d mark 2k5 before was 9,600 and after was 10,000. Thanks for your help.

I dunno, fudging the bios on an already VERY hot and not too cheap card sounds like a bad Idea.
Gains in oblivion are suppos to be most noticeable in outdoor areas.
I game at 1280*1024 with everything pretty high on my X1800XT, lowest framerates are outdoors with many NPCs running around. Those average at 23FPS.
I use 8HQ AF. and the settings stated here.
All in all I wouldnt mind an X1900XT, but I don't feel like spending any more cash before DX10 cards are out.
