X1800XT lousy overclocks

So i got my X1800xt today and went straight to overclocking it of course. I easily hit 700 core but my memory is clocking horrible. Even using the included overdrive tab which enables up to 1800mhz memory speed (which by what im reading is pretty easily achieved). I clock anything past 1550mhz mem speed and everything is fine and dandy until I start a game/benchmark. Immediately i get a light blue screen or a black screen and my pc completely hard locks. Case temps are 34c and the x1800xt is idling at around 48c and 76c at load. I dont think the PSU is an issue. Its an ocz 580w and ran my 7800gtx's no prob. usually when i clock a card to high in memory, i get corruption etc, but never where the app wont even load. Its not even getting past the splash screens of the game when it locks up. back it off to 1500mhz (stock) and everything runs fine. Bad memory chips? Ideas?

Maybe try removing the stock cooler and applying your own thermal compound? You could also maybe get an after market cooler as well.
 
With my XL, giving more gpu voltage helped the memory get higher, so you might try that, if not keep the memory where it runs and see how high the core will go at stock voltages.
 
I was getting around 700-705mhz on stock volts. Above that and the gpu gets mighty toasty around 85c. What i have a problem understanding is why the game will freeze even before the 3d is used in it, ie. the splash screens. If the memory was being pushed to hard wouldnt that result in the game freezing/crashing when the 3d starts coming into play?
 
I had 2 3d fuzion 7800gtx's. Sold them to my bro with the intention of getting another 1800xt in Crossfire provided they can really get them to work in any mainboard.

I dont think its the memory, its the memory controller on the GPU. Thats why i think more core voltage helps.
 
That makes sense. I'l try to up it a bit. How high can i go without frying it?

Try .025 and them maybe .05 and see what happens. With my xl i went to 1.4 and didnt fry it :cool:

Man with a $400 to 600 I be afraid to overclock that much. I was worried moding my $180 3dc x800gto. I would be happy with the overclock on stock voltage. 700mhz core is not fast enough?

lol I would of suck with your video cards untill 512mb GTX comes out... SLi two of them saves you buying a Crossfire mobo and a Crossfire "master card".

But I can see why you wanted a X1800XT as they are suppose to be good overclockers.

Confirmed 580/1750 out now. They should be around same price of X1800XT before Xmas. (who knows for sure though)

Yes, good overclocks but am fighting my DFI Crossfire board right now....... The memory settings are totally different than with a NF4.

Mmm, I'm not too enthousiastic yet. He had to downclock 3D speed to get it artifactfree in 3DM05.

The only 3dmark05 score i got in 3d mode was 9101. I had to mess with the overclock settings to be able to run 3dmark05 without it artifacting. The numbers were way off so i couldnt really tell you what true speed i was running. There is something wrong with the software for sure.

I messed with the volts/settings all morning. The best i can muster is stable 700/775. I know thats not to bad. Im going to take the heatsink off now and apply some AS5 and see what that does. Whats odd about my oc is that anything above 775 and instant crash. No artifacting etc, just hardlock. Strange.

I was thinking of going 2x512mb GTX, but ive heard that ATI may enable x-fire on mainboards other than x-fire ready mainboards, like my DFI NF-4 Lanparty. I dont know the truth to this, but i hope its true.
 
on my xt i am at 690 800 as thats the max with the ccc available, any pointers on using the oc tool? anyway to increase the ocing via the control panel.

this card doesnt run that much hotter than the x850xtpe, at least not in water, and the memory is only using ramsinks.
at 31c ambients, i am getting about 40c idle. dont know load as temps go back to 41c as soon as i quit a game. the x850xtpe was getting 37c at same ambient temps...

does ati warranty ocing?
my control panel goes all the way to 800, so max at least in 5.10a is 1600 on the memory not 1800...
and 690 on the core....
 
if uve put watercooling on, then youve already voided ur warrenty....and a good way to check ur temp in games is by using atitool and putting monitoring graphs on while ur playing ur game
