Sup everyone,

I recently grabbed a Sapphire X1800XT off of newegg, got here last night and installed it. Using ATI 6.8 drivers, according to ATI tool it idles at 64*C under load I've seen it touch 90*C!!!

I had an X850XT just before this that would idle around 40*C and touch high 70's under load.

In ATI tool I have the fan set to change with the temp,
27% @ 55C
32% @ 65
36% @ 75
45% @ 80
59% @ 91
68% @ 95
100% @ 98

For the past five minutes I've had the fan set to 100%, and it seems to be steady at 50*C... Fan is whaling!

It also says the temp chip is 44*C

My setup is a
CoolerMaster Centurion 5 with the 80mm up front, and 120mm in back. Then my power supply has an 80mm on the bottom and back. Running stock AMD HS/F... 1 HDD, 1 DVD drive...
 
Welcome to the X1800 series! High temps and loud coolers is one of the big reasons ATI got X1900 out the door so fast. Running the fan at max gets temps under control, but it's loud as hell.

I suggest getting an aftermarket cooler if it's in the budget. I've installed two Arctic Cooling units with great success. Lowered my card temps by almost 20C. :)
 
I hate to say it but your temps are not that unusual. I got an accelero 2 on mine and run it at 100% all of the time. It is not audbile at all and keeps it under 80C. These cards are just hot... no two ways about it...
 
the temps weren't why the 1900's were on time. The 1800 series had countless delays many of which were not helped by the co-development of the xbox 360's graphics hardware that was going on at the same time. The 1900's didn't have these delays or problems in the manufacturing process.

There were a lot of threads a while back on the issue, you'd just have to search for them.

as for the heat...if you're keeping the stock cooler, you could lap it and use some better thermal paste. Also be sure to keep the fins clean of any dust...at least on mine they tend to collect dust and I have to clean it about once every 2-3 months.
 
What's the better cooler for this thing? A VF-700 or the Accelero X2? I've read a few reviews favoring the VF700, but I was wondering what you guys picked.

90c doesn't seem so bad after running a 6600gt for near 2 years that would reach the same at loud. However this baby is considerably louder!
 
My settings are so the fan reaches 100% at 74C.
50% is around 60C.
My XL idles around 55C at 40% and it's got a crappier cooler.
 
i have accelero X2 on my baby, dont have much against it (nor the zalman), there's a test on firingsquad.com between the zalman and arctic coolnig coolers might get you more info, if not get the one you can get cheaper
 
the vf900 keeps mine @ no more than 55c load and is silent doing it.Thats with an 700/825 oc
 
It seems temps have settled down a little, maybe it being a new card the thermal paste had to set in for a day or so. Looks like it's lost 10*C both idle and under load, idleing right now at 55*C with fan at 36%. Just earlier after playing BF2 with all high settings 6x AA/ 16x AF it never touch 80*C... Here are my new fan settings, tweaked them a little...
