I was just wondering if the x1800xt uses the same gpu as the x1900xt? Kinda like how the x800 uses the same gpu as the x850s.

no, the X1800/R520 has 16 pipes and 16 pixel shader processors while the X1900/R580 has 16 pipes and 48 pixel shader processors

It sort of is the same GPU. Almost all parts of it are identical except for all the ALUs/shader processors that they stuck in there. Bascially there's 3x more of one part in the 1900 than the 1800.

If you were to look at just the cards they'd be almost identical.

also its a more mature core as well. aka higher clocks can be achieved.

To point out a couple more things about this card. In addition to the superior shader performance, this card also has faster RAM, as the X1800XT has 1.2 ns RAM, and the X1900XT(x) has 1.1 ns RAM (I am 98% sure of this). It's also notable to point out that the x1900 has ~62M more transistors in it than the x1800. It's an all around faster and more scalable card than the x1800, not that I don't like the 1800 too :)

Its allmost like the transition from the 6800s to the 7800s allthough the 7800 added more features. The X1800XT has two new features but mainly just a big boost in power.

Ya They are pretty damn close, but as more games use more shaders, the X1900 should pull away from the X1800 cards. Not to say the X1800 is a slouch, its a great card and now with the X1900, you can find it under or around 400$, great buy IMO snigle card which can match or beat the 512MB 7800GTX :p ;)
