X1800XL heat problems.

Just got my new rig yesterday.
Asus P5WD2 Premium
Intel pentuim D 2.80GHZ 2MB L2 775LGA
1GBx2 Corsair 6400
WD Raptor 74GBx2 in raid0
antec 550 true power PSU
etc

So I put it all together and everything is running nice. 3dmark05 benches at 6329. Not bad, but I was expecting higher.

I left the machine on overnight to burn in. Nothing running at all.
I wake up in the morning, and the screen was frozen with horrid artifacts. I reboot the machine and there are still ortifacts in post. Looks like weird blocks changing numbers and letters. Screen is illegible.

I let the machine cool off for an hour. I turn it back on and and I get another 30 minutes out of the machine before she overheats again.

Now mind you the case is WIDE open, and the room is air conditioned, and fairly cold. I have three case fans going BESIDES the two on the side panel thats off.

Every time I boot the machine it has those artifacts. I dump my old x800xl and everything runs fine.

I dump the troublesome card into a machine I am building for a client and the card is doing the same thing.

I sent it back to newegg for an RMA. I am just very worried about repeating the same problem again. I have poked around on the forum and noticed one person was having problems with heat, even with water cooling.

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas.
 
If it's even with water cooling they might just be producing dud chips, which would be TERRiBLE for ati.
An RMA was the right choice though.
 
Odd..... must have been a bad card or something as mine ran fine once I knew what the true temp was on the GPU.
 
RMA

I'm leary of this first round of x1800xl cards. I think they're using the old r520 cores from before the electrical problems were fixed. The cards produced a couple months from now will probably be great, identical to an xt just with slower memory.
