has there been any bios updates for the ATI x1800xl cards? Can you flash the xl with the xt bios? or is it the same with just different clock speeds. I'm already overclocking 560/560.

Haven't heard. I doubt there are any bios that would automatically yield xt speeds, as these are supposedly failed xt cores. I've got mine up to 607/702.

Maybe a bios with relaxed ram timings may help some ?

At any rate, I doubt we'll see any offical bios flashes. Maybe a homemade one though..

Rage 3d is where I would ask.

xl owner here also. yes this would be really cool. but im sure it wont worl unless a homade one is made.i would need a new cooler if i did. :)

If someone was able to edit the voltages via bios (like Sapphire did with it's XT bios), it would be possible to set clocks higher, if not to XT core speeds at default. Memory is a different story, as the XT uses 1.2ns (1600mhz) and the XL 1.4ns (1400mhz). More likely than not, 1600mhz would be an unobtainable goal for the mass public. 625/1400 could be possible though as a stock option with correct voltage.

Here's the reasons why an XT bios wouldn't work, and why a modded XL bios would be hard to do:

1 XL has 256mb of ram, XT 512; incompatibility.

2. Stock hsf on XL sucks (compared to XT). The voltage needed to hit 625-700 in most cases will exceed it's ability and the card would run to hot. XL's to my knowledge run at ~1.2v core, and XT's run at 1.4v. The memory voltage is also different, although I forget the exact numbers. The XL sink is cheap, and made only to handle the lower volts. Some people have tested the XL with the XT sink, and it is possible to hit 700mhz core with similar voltage. The reason no bios would be made with the higher volts and higher stock clocks is that obviously some idiot with stock cooling would flash it and fry his card.

Your best bet as an x1800xl owner is to slap on some aftermarket cooling at least as powerful as the XT stock, use the soft-voltage programs to adjust voltage to at least XT levels, and save the settings to start-up, if that is possible. I am not sure if ATiTool has this ability yet. If it doesn't, it will eventually. I know W1zzard has been working his ass off on it.

With a little love, you should be able to hit 625/1400 as a minimum, but some have achieved 700/1.5+ with decent aftermarket air cooling, higher with water.

stock voltages for me is 1.02/1.785/1.785 i can hit XT core speeds 625 very easy. 1.175 volts. the mem is another question. just need a better heat sink atm. but i dont need nearly as much voltage as the XT does.

That's a pretty impressive overclock...actually, I'm having a hard time believing you got that with the stock cooler. What are your temps like?

I wonder how higher it would hit if you put something nice on it like a Zalman or maybe one of those new AC Accelero's.

yea im pretty unsure how it does that with stock cooling but i hit highs of 77 ish. default volts and speeds i get like 69 high.

im looking to sell ATM kinda want an x1900 xl aiw when it comes out.
