X1800 Temps

I had plans for a 7800GT, but now the X1800XL has come into my price range.

I wanted what the final word on the temperatures of this card. Does it really reach 90C? If it does, then I won't buy it and I'll just stick to a GT. Otherwise, it seems a better choice.

Also how reliable is Saphire? Are they good with warranties/RMAs?

I'm fairly sure the 90C temps were just read wrong from CCC, W1zzard on TP has released a Beta ATITool to a few people that say temps dropped at least 20C at load, so that's obviously a good thing.
Then, I saw on XS that the first few batches of cores will run hotter than the rest, because of manufacturing kinks, or something like that, I don't pretend I read the whole thing through. Anyway. It was there. *struggling for belief* It was!
 
people are reporting 70C at load with the new tool

edit: and sapphire is a very popular brand for ATI products, i haven't heard of any major problems with them, probably the reason they were first to the market with the new cards
 
I had a X1800XL and a 7800GT this past weekend. It is obvious that the 7800 cards are more refined. The temps hoovered around 87-90C on the X1800XL. Even if the temp was inaccurate the card still cycled the fan constantly. The fan is loud too- and I have 6 other case fans and I could hear the X1800XL's fan over them. The colors were a bit sharper and brighter on the ATI card though. However, FEAR MP demo ran slow with quite a bit of stuttering and HL2 and CS:S stuttered with the ATI card. I will admit that the overall IQ is slightly better than the 7800 but I decided to return the X1800XL and get another 7800GT. The 7800 runs everything flawlessly for me. I was hoping for more from ATI. I could wait for new drivers but the high pitch whine of the fan is what did it for me. Not quite 5800Ultra loud, but close to me when it speeds up.

if the drivers are reporting inaccurate temps of +20C and im going to assume the drivers controll fan speed then ofcourse the fan is going to be loud. i bet as soon as a driver comes out that fixes the temp reporting issue fan speed wont be a problem.
 
You probably right, but I was unwilling to wait. I see you're in Akron- the Mayfield Microcenter now has one X1800XL back in stock :)
 
This reminds me of when the original Rage128 came out. Alot of reviewers were commenting on just how hot it got (something like 80C), and a bunch of integrators were afraid to put it in systems for fear it would damage other parts of the computer ... ATI eventually secame to pressure put active cooling on the card. Ahh back in the day when active cooling was the odd man out and no one even considered dual slot cooling (of course, no one used AA or played at resolutions higher than 640x480x16, but that is beside the point).

My 7800 fan was just as loud as the XL1800XL fan........
 
Yeah I'm not worried about sound level at all. There is only one fan that I can hear in my case, and that is my 120mm fan which runs at 2000RPM. If I lower the RPM, then my case is 100% silent. I have 1x120mm, 2x80mm and stock CPU fan. So The addition of this card would make my computer sound 'normal' at most.

While the nVidia cards seem to almost always get higher framerates, the X1800XL seems to power through any AA mode you can throw at it with decent framerates. It's temperatures were my only concern. Thanks :)
 
I'm actually pretty impressed by the stock cooler. It's pretty quiet, definitely the quietest stock non-passive cooler I've heard, the only thing is that it revs up randomly. Seems like a driver issue and when the new ATI utilities come out I'm sure there will be proper reported temps and fan control as was the case with the X800 series.

Temps will be the least of your concerns. They idle and load about 3-5c more than Nvidias offering right now. No big deal.

No I was only concerned about the temperatures because people were reporting 90C+. Now that seems to have been an error. So all is well now.

No, the reason they were first to the market with the new cards was because they make all ATI branded cards as well, so basically the only difference is the warranty.

Seems the new 5.10a drivers correct temps *and* more importantly, stop that annoying random fan spinup at idle.
