was wondering which is the better card (price wise) for gaming?......the x1600xt is $175 CAN & the x800gto2 is $199 CAN.....can anybody find any websites that compare these 2....I couldn't find any....thanks!

The X800GTO2 will be a little better for gaming. On top of that, you can unlock it to X850XT speeds. Go with the X800GTO2.

sweet.....thanks!.....but what about the regualr x800gto...would that still be better than the x1600xt or bout the same?

Most (if not all) of the GTO2's are guaranteed to come with 16 working pipes. They will either come with all 16 unlocked, or with 12 unlocked but a guarantee of being able to unlock the remaining 4, usually with a simple bios flash.

The regular GTO will (99% of the time) only have 12 pipes, the last 4 will either be laser cut, or broken.

An example of instructions to unlock the pipes (GTO2) can be found here,

(btw I accept no responsibility if you break your card unlocking it) :p

Two things to keep in mind (as I've owned both types of cards):

- The X800s are a much larger die size than the X1600XT. They get HOT under load. I had an X800XT PE that got up to 120C (yes, Celsius) when overclocked. Rock-solid stable, mind, just fracking HOT. In comparison, the X1600XTs are a HELL of a lot cooler. I have the Asus 'Silent' model - no fans at all, totally passively cooled - running perfectly stable, overclocked, in an Shuttle XPC (SFF system).

- The X800s are SM2.0 parts. The X1600XT is SM3.0 - and yes, before somebody says it - it most definitely DOES have the horsepower to push that. I was running 'Oblivion' at 800x600 with 4xAA and HDR just peachy keen on that card (looked better than 1280x1024 with 0xAA...and ran better, too).

EDIT: All that said, if you can wait, the X1700XT (should) be about around June-July timeframe, and that's really not far off, now. And if the budget allows, the GeForce 7600GT is probably the better card in this price range (although definitely on the upper end of it).

damn....thanks 4 the replies guys......I doubt I'll be doing any unlocking since this card will be purchased 4 a friend of mine.....just reading some of the instructions on flashing the card seems complicated....x1700s eh....didn't hear anything about that....which card is it gonna be on par with??.....guess I'll ask him 2 wait if its true about the x1700s coming out soon.....thanks again!

how about it's like this. X800 vanilla is practically on par with a 6600GT, X1600pro is on par with a 6600GT (although not as good in some tests). X1600XT is about a 6800 vanilla. X800GTO is a little better than that. But, X1600XT does have tech that x800GTO doesn't, so it depends. Tech over raw power? or raw power over tech?
