I wasn't sure what forum to put this one in, but Virtualized Computing seems like it would be related to using stuff like VirtualBox. If it needs to be moved, I'm sorry.

I purchased SimCity 3000 from Loki Games a while back, and it's never worked right with anything other than Red Hat 6.x. Note that this isn't RHEL, this is the old one codenamed Zoot. I remember getting them to work on Mandrake back in the day, but it was a pain in the butt and I was only able to do it once. After that, I just dual-booted that version of Red Hat until I got a PC that wouldn't run it.

I had to move the virtual hard drive from the SATA to the IDE interface in order to get it to install on the VM, but I don't know what kind of generic driver I'm supposed to use to get X working at a reasonable resolution. I think VirtualBox wants Linux to fall back to a generic VESA driver, but Red Hat is trying to ask me for very specific details of my setup like exactly what 2000's era Video Card I use, horizontal sync rates of a CRT monitor, etc. The generic VGA and fbdev drivers fail, but the SVGA driver works... at 320x200. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse than Windows 3.11 defaulting to 640x480. Red Hat 6 now gains the dubious honor of having the most unusuable resolution I've ever been forced to struggle with... most applications, I could barely see four lines of text in the window.

Is there any way to do this, or am I pretty much out of luck if I don't have an old computer with a video card that Red Hat recognizes? It seems like most people take for granted that you'll be using an OS that you can install guest additions for, and I think this one is too old for that. I'm not liking my odds...

I need to get a 16-bit color mode working in order to have a chance. I doubt I would need 3D acceleration for this game, as it's just an isometric view.
