Does the Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro require a power connection from the PSU (similiar to high-end graphics cards) to run? Or is it just to supply power to the external box?

Draws very little power, enough for headphone amplification and to run an optical out (nothing like pro audio stuff though).

Edit: its a floppy drive connector to the front break out box.

a high end graphics card while physically connected to the psu is no comparison in terms of power draw.

the card alone no, but if you have bays (Platinum, Fatal1ty), then you need to connect it to the PSU.
im not sure for Elite Pro tho, whenever i look at it, it seems like that "bay" (or whatever it is called) wont fit where ROMs fit.

It uses a mini PSU connection, yes. The breakout is powered from the card.
