X-Fi Platinum, can you skip the I/O Box?

Basically I just got my system done and now I am ready to power off and install my X-Fi. Someone gave it to me so I figure I might as well use it (was gonna get a Prelude but I like free).

Question is, can I just pop in the card and completely ignore the I/O Box? I don't plan on using it at all.
 
The expansion boxes are quite expensive as "add ons" if bought separately. You may be able to sell yours on ebay for some dough to those that own non-platinum versions of the X-Fi cards.
