I have a 680i board and already am using one of the two PCI slots for a tuner card. I do have another PCI slot open, but if I ever go SLI in the future I will only have 1 available.

I remember seeing a picture of a X-Fi PCIe card and also news of Asus working on PCIe audio cards...

How soon do you think we will see a good gaming PCIe solution or should I just pull the gun on an X-Fi now?

Do you want to wait? You may be waiting awhile for the PCI-e Version of the X-fi and the Asus card won't have the gaming standards the X-fi will.

To be honest, I had an old 4 year old outdated PC using onboard sound so I'm really not sure of the difference X-Fi vs onboard would make in gaming and music.

I have Klipsch ProMedia 4.1s (6 yrs old and still kicking) and onboard "HD" sound from a 680i board w/a Realtek chip.

There is no ETA on PCIe X-Fi cards I suppose? I was scouring the net, but no luck finding any solid information.

I will definitely be playing games and listening to music, maybe I should just buy it. That's definitely the best price I've seen in a while.

Just go for the X-fi. Your gonna notice alot better sound quality in music and gaming compared to a 4 year old onboard. The X-fi;s are great deals right now. Buy it try it out if you don;t like it then return the card.

Bad explanation on my part and you misunderstood.

I recently built a new computer and the onboard is a Realtek "HD" chip on a Evga 680i board.

Is there really a noticable difference w/a decent speaker system (promedia 4.1) vs this onboard?

Thanks.

I'd say you'd notice a difference and it'd be worth the 50 -70 bucks for the lower end x-fi cards. Waiting for pcie now, not sure about that. I plan on upgrading in a few months and i hope there is something better than the x-fi as i'll be using vista and if they don't have better driver support will probably just wait it out.

Yeah, I'm using Vista right now and have had no trouble with Nvidia drivers, ATI Theater 550 drivers, etc...

Actually, no trouble with Vista whatsoever...

I read about the bad Vista support, but honestly I've read about bad vista support for everything that is running great for me now so I'm not so sure I believe the vocal minority on a lot of these issues.

As for the low end, I can't seem to find the xtreme gamer for less than $90 (after shipping) so this deal seems good to me.
