I am currently using the onboard sound card on my Sony pc with altec fx-6021 speakers, they are only 2.1.

Which is better the x-fi or the audigy 4 for my setup? I mostly listen to music and watch movies and the occasional dvd.

Price is $80 for the A4 and $130 for the x-fi at my local best buy, so price among these two is not that huge. I just want to make sure I have the "right" one for me, any recommendations?

I vote X-fi.
I had an a2 zs and noticed difference..... Unless its the a4 plat pro, I believe the DACs are the same or similar. So that leaves the sound processor. The x-fi is better and is not limited on sampling rate.

Good speakers are needed also.

Depends on what you would like to do with your computer. If you play games and listen to MP3's then the X-FI is for you with its EAX support in games and its bump in fidelity for lossy encoded (MP3/WMA) music files.

If you are more into making your own music, then go with the Audigy4 for its software bundle thats included.

Remember folks, that's an Audigy 4 (the rebadged A2), and not the Audigy 4 PRO.

Get the X-Fi. Why buy older tech?

Well after reading tons of reviews and posts about the x-fi, I returned the A4 without even trying it...and got the x-fi, I installed last night and it sounds great...I think my combo the x-fi with the Altec FX6021 sound great together...since it was late I could not really turn up the volume too loud but what I heard sounded very good. I have not played with the calibrations just left as is in defaults.

Strange question: with my new x-fi do I have to use the creative software such as the media player in order to get full sound out of it or will it sound the same if I use my itunes?

You will pretty much get the same sound out of your X-Fi if you use iTunes. You do need certain portions of the Creative software (such as the Creative Console Launcher and Mode Switcher), in addition to the drivers, in order to get the basic functionality of the X-Fi series cards.

I did install all the software, so it should be the same quality if I use creative media player or itunes or microsoft player...correct?
