WWDC thread

this kind of sucks, i was hoping for a MacBook with merom for dec when i am able to buy one :(
 
just watched the keynote. sooner than i expected lol. but the things that impressed me the most were webclips, time machine, universal access and of course the mac pro.

the bertrand guy was pretty funny about vista too lol.

"when we said, "Redmond, start your photocopiers" we meant it as a joke! but they actually took it seriously!" hahaha
 
I really like alot of the new features coming in Leopard. I've never owned a Mac, and i've been a hardcore Windows/PC user - but alot of these convienent, and easy to use OSX features make me want to get a MB, or MBP. I've been eyeing these things all summer, and it seems like such a long wait just for Merom to come out (seems like Sept). Now i'd have to wait for Leopard all the way in Spring 07! Does anyone have an estimate of how much an upgrade from Tiger->Leopard will cost?

They don't sell upgrade copies. You'll have to buy a full retail version of Leopard once it's out. That's, what, $129?

I was disappointed by WWDC. I was hoping/expecting for new monitors; it's been over TWO YEARS since Apple introduced new displays. Apparently, the specs have been bumped up so it's possible the displays are using new panels but a monitor is more than the display. These monitors still aren't future-proof at all; still no HDMI input (with HDCP support). There seems to be a pattern here; Apple appears intent on squeezing every drop of blood out of its current form factors before investing in a new design look. Is all the design money being budgeted to the iPod division? The Macbook Pro is basically the same as the Powerbook, as is the Mac Pro and the Cinema Displays. I suspect Apple will wait to coordinate the introduction of new displays that include HDMI port until it rolls out Blu-ray drives, at the earliest next year. On the one hand, why introduce monitors with a new port when there's so little use for it but then again, Apple put ExpressCards in the Macbook Pro when support was equally sparse!
 
Here's my two cents. If you are a "Pro user" as Apple would say, this would be excellent news just because you can get a really nice Apple powerhouse for a descent price. However, if you are like me, an average Mac user, you don't need a Mac Pro. It's overkill.

(Even though I just like the looks of it . . . ah ha)

I can't wait to get my hands on Leopard though . . looks really cool. I got a hunch that the whole Apple line is going to go down in price soon. That would actually be a good things because all of my PC friends might finally consider switching over to the better of the two sides. :D

There should have been core 2/merom imacs.

Core duo should have been removed from the mini, the mini retired, and a shuttle form factor imac announced.

Why bother showing Leopard unless you have something *really* interesting to show? People want finder fixed, instead you get "oh you can now insert this garbage into mail!" /stab stab stab/.

From what I've seen the best thing to do with a mac is get the 3rd party program that allows for a windows explorer type interface on OSX. (I forget what this app is called).

I'd rank this WWDC a failure, and I was on 4 different irc networks with hundreds of mac users and that seemed the general consensus.

Concerning the enclosures;
perhaps apple is keeping the same/similar enclosures to send a message that they're still apple computers even though the insides are pretty much generic now and to make the transition to intel transparent to consumers.

That doesn't make sense to me. The way Apple showed continuity is by having OS X running perfectly on the Intel Macs, not by recycling enclosures. Two years is a lifetime, especially for Apple, which has more of a consumer electronics mindset than most computer companies. What kind of company that prides itself on its industrial design uses the same design for two years running? Dell or HP may use the same cases year-in year-out but not Apple. In any case, whatever the reason for this pause in Apple industrial design, I hope it ends soon. The gray look for the Mac Pro, Macbook Pro and Cinema Displays has gotten old; I think the glossy black and white iMac/Macbook look is much more compelling.

1. What is the WWDC? A developer conference, but iMac = Consumer Product, that update will be left till Paris (I know a month is a very long time)
2. Core 2 Duos aren't produced in high enough numbers yet to really implement them, wait till Paris, since especially the Memron should have been annouced later
3. What do you mean by "people want the finder fixed?" I perosnally love the finder...
4. Why would you want an explorer interface on the Mac?
5. Renounce the mini? It is the cheapest computer in its size class and why do you want it larger than it is?

To give my two cents to the outcome of the WWDC. We saw what was expected nothing really that outstanding (well maybe Time Machine), so I conclude it wasn't a failure nor a success just another keynote
 
About my Mac Pro... I don't think the 7300's can be used in SLi...

But yeah, I plan on buying RAM from NewEgg and a few hard drives to pop in. I'll be sure to photograph everything but it seeems I wont be receiving the first one. Since I ordered a few build-to-order options such as the X1900XT and Bluetooth and Fibre Channel card for my future XRaid, my expected ship date is September 12th

Personally I think the Mac Pro (old PowerMac) is about the best looking case out there, windows box or MacOS. They fixed the two major flaws in it: lack of HD expansion space and only one optical drive with this revision anyway.

I will take bare metal over the plasticy iMac look anyday.
 
I appreciate the solid structure of the Powermac G5, the solind aluminum and the huge heatsinks/radiator covered in the aluminum 'G5' logo was nice. They have prescence, you know it's not something to be messed with :p The Mac Pro case looks just as good on the inside too.

As NulloModo said, I want my Workstation to look substantial, not cartoon/kitchen like plastic!

The heatsink of the old G5s took up wayyy too much space, a big waste.
 
The PMG5/MP case is sexy. But to be honest, I actually prefer the old Power Mac G4 cases (Quicksilver, MDD, etc). It's not as insanely huge, and looks really good.

The grey and white monstrosity? I never opened up an aluminum G5 case, but I can't imagine it is better enough inside to counter the looks of that grey and white G4 thing.

I like the outside of the latter G4 models. They have much better handles than the PMG5/MP case as well. Not as slick interiors, though.

The metal still feels stronger.
 
It feels heavier, too. Have you ever carried a Power Mac G5? They're pretty heavy, and very uncomfortable to lug around.

They way a freaking ton. I tried carrying the emacs the other day, they're freaking heavy too. LCDs made me weak.

I wish I liked the Mac Pro / Power Mac case more. I don't like the holes in the front; engadget called it the "cheese grater" and I agree. I also think the handles are too prominent and look awkward. Of course, I agree the inside of the case is a work of genius.
 
How does Time Machine work? Sounds like it would fill up your HDD real quick!

good question. after seeing a mac pro in person, the hard drives will have some airflow over the top of the drive(s), but no direct airflow that I noticed...hmm
