WWDC thread

Some people find virtual desktops useful. I'd just rather have a second monitor.

What..."10:53 am written in half the lines of a typical screen saver to produce better results"...the fuck

Interlacing is better? o_O

Core Animation sounds great. As a software developer, I've always wanted the ability to make my apps look cool. Yet its a giant PITA to make shit move around, and have the app flow really well. Core Animation looks like it might go a long way to making it easier.

half the lines OF CODE.

"Schiller changes his background - no green screen - steps out of frame, set the background, automatically masks out background"

Neat-o.

So are current Macbook/Pro and G4s, etc, users screwed out of Leopard...since it's 64bit native? WTF.

No. Leopard will run on 32-bit hardware as well, most likely.

Hmm how? The slide said 64bit unix, coca, etc. 32bit app compatibility. :( It's gonna be a sad year. Jobs said 64bit top to bottom, I think he just screwed over a whole shit load of people.

Leopard is "fat." Ever since Tiger came out, you've been able to have applications containing both 64-bit and 32-bit versions in the same file. So called "fat binaries." I guess the entire operating system is now "fat."

I don't see why it would be any other way. The core in Tiger is 64-bit, right? And it runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware. And why in the nine hells would Apple make an operating system that doesn't run on 90% of the currently shipping hardware? It doesn't make sense.

I was kind of expecting Leopard to stop the support for G3 machines, though.

it means that if you have 32-bit hardware, then you can still run Leopard. if you have 64-bit hardware, you can run it as well.

if you have 64-bit hardware and a pile of 32-bit legacy apps, those will run in Leopard as well.

Why's that? I would think that would happen when they drop PPC support as a whole.

Would it be because of a ROM issue with G3's?

I don't know, really. But the G3s are so damned old that they really shouldn't need to support them. By not having G3 support, they can basically put vector unit optimizations into the operating system and not worry about compatibility.

Supposedly OS X 10.6 (whatever it may be) will be the first to drop PPC support.

I am really looking forward to leopard, i like the Spaces thing, as well as the other nix-y elements being added. I also will come to appreciate the workstation side of things that are new. And I might just have to switch back to iChat now!

According to who?

(Or is that "whom"?)

it is whom :p

i doubt it will drop PPC support until 2009, since apple knows that most of the machines are build to last. It might even take till Mac OS XI till they drop it, who knows

Wooo! Ordered my dual 3.0ghz Mac Pro w/ x1900xt! I was a tad disappointed not to see a Crossfire or SLi solution but whatever! The x1900xt is a 'tad' better than my 9600XT.

Then I'm going to go bug the Storage & Memory forums on advice to add RAM & HD.

Thanks. ;)

And I agree. There is little reason for them to drop PowerPC support. The customers are moving to Intel MUCH faster than I had anticipated (but I guess that's because the transition only took half as long as they originally claimed), but PowerPC is still very common. And there are a LOT of Power Mac G5s out there, in the hands of pro users with more than enough money to buy the operating system upgrades. The added workload of maintaining the PowerPC version should be fairly limited. Most of the system components (frameworks, core apps, etc) are probably easy as pie to port (just check the "universal binary" button, basically).

when is the keynote going to be broadcast?? anyone know?

The Mac Pro is so tempting, espeically with my student discount.

Anyone want to buy a G4 Mini 1.23, Dual G4 1.3, and a Dual G5 1.8? :D

There is SLI. They have an option to order 3 nvidia cards.

Though SLI is pretty much a waste as you can get a single card, for cheaper, that will outperform.

Could be? Not too sure.

I like the fact that Apple isn't afraid to do major transitions.

Time Machine is Volume Shadow Copy that looks neat.

Apple doesnt have %95 of the market to worry about screwing and hundreds of 3rd party people to have to re-make drivers.

So now that the key note is over, does that mean there is no chance of a new Macbook pro being released at this event?

the keynote will be posted on the apple webpage later on today

About the SLI topic

There is an option for 4x7300, so please look before posting and thanks for the being the beta tester for the community :D

I'm not entirely sure it's actually SLI. It might just be multiple GPUs for multiple displays.

Yep, that's right.

I think it was on wikipedia a while ago and some apple rumor sites. Dont know how true it is, but if you consider that firewire is the choke point for tiger running on older machines, x86 could be for the 6.

I believe the 4 7300s is for video wall type applications. A GF7300 will have two DVI outputs (one dual link and one single link). So the idea is if you have 8 single link DVI monitors you could hook them all to this one MP.

A rumors... that reminds of the guys post i read about today in another forum which talked about MacBooks in a thin version.
