Buddy of mine basically fried his controller board on his harddrive, which happens to contain a ton of pictures. Looking to find someone who has a working/non-working Western Digital 1TB drive he can buy to attempt to salvage the pictures.

Specs:
Harddrive = WD1001FALS-00J7B0
Board S/N = 2061-701567-400 AE

Lemme know if you have something that can work and we'll deal!

Very difficult to fry the actual platter that has the data. Usually something on the control board gives out preventing further damage.

Well, from description it's probably the component that has the black charcoal growing out of it. :p

Bump for your search, and hopefully your buddy learning the importance of backups! ;)

free bump for a good cause

BTW, not to state the obvious but have you looked on eBay?

These drives can be had at Microcenter for $99 for retail drives. I think the OEM version is slightly less. However, resurrecting bad drives sometimes takes more than a controller board swap. From what I understand there is a calibration unique to each drive in the firmware of the controller. You have to hope for a "close enough" type of solution. If it does work I'd suggest copying everything to another drive as fast as possible and returning the board to the donor drive and hope for the best.

You don't want to trust a ghetto repaired drive. They really need to go back to the manufacturer for refurbishment / proper repair.
