I looked around a bit and didn't find any recent threads matching my interest, but here goes.

I'm looking to buy a full system, tower only, that will be for my little brother for college. Nothing to fancy or overboard required. He'll just be using it for the normal things: research reports, writing papers, internet usage and music and videos with an ipod. Standard stuff. I would build him one myself, but because of time constraints and distance, that won't be feasible.

As for specific things I'm looking for in the box, as long as it will suffice for the abovementioned purposes but not be a total crapfest, it will probably suffice. For a rough estimate of specs for the price, I'd guess the system could contain anything around: amd athlon XP or pentium 4, hdd capacity of at least 80G, integrated video is fine, memory at least 512, and a dealbreaker may be if it has an available OS preinstalled or at least available. Depending on price, i could buy winXP (bro can't use anything else :) ) and load that on if necessary, but I'd rather have something that's ready to go.

He doesn't want to spend more then around $400

Hope that's descriptive enough, let me know. I'd rather go through someone here first if possible rather then buy some refurbished or bargain basement deal from an online merchant.

I can easily provide a different video card at a lower cost if that would meet your requirements better. This served as an HTPC for me, but is a very nice overall general system as well.
 
Mine is a Compaq Evo D310, upgraded to these specs: P4 2.53, 512DDR, 200GB Hard drive,CD-ROM, added firewire card, onboard Video, audio, NIC, legit Windows XP Pro, with restore media.

(Used to have a agp card & DVD burner, but I sold them, even though you can see them in the pic, It now has a open AGP slot.)

I would put a burner in it if I was keeping it, and a agp card for gaming, but since it is just a surfing & paperwork machine, it is fine as is.

$221 shipped to 84040 in Utah.

I put together systems myself, using good parts, especially when the system is for me or my family. I recently assembled one that came out pretty well, but over-spending at Christmas forces me to make some sacrifices. Check it out and see if this is what you had in mind for your brother:
