So smartctl has one of my drives at 100% chance of failure within the next year which best I can tell usually means a whole lot sooner than that. Ive never bought a used drive in my life but prices at the moment are exorbitant.

10TB is the preferred cut off for a few reasons. best i can tell thats the capacity in which SMR goes out the window for one, and also my parity disks are only 10TB so thats what im filling my chassis with for now if i can help it. (that being said if you have a 12 etc priced right im not gonna turn it down lol)

prefer seagate (barracuda pro/exos/ironwolf matters less) but money talks. even if its an external ill shuck it, just lmk what ya got.

paying via paypal/have heat.

(New 16TB enterprise ones are around $299 right now in certain places.)

budget is entirely dependent on drive size more or less. definitely not 299 for a single drive. brand new 10TB CMR/7200s are ~225 (which is still overpriced considering i bought my current 10TB disks for less than that like 3 years ago) and by and large anything over 10TB is wasteful in my current set up due to parity disks being 10TB. (that being said, anything under 10TB is also generally wasteful but moreso due to usually being SMR than space per dollar)

trying to stay in the 10-12TB range. Cheaper the better as I wasnt intending to buy any new drives till tax season but that smart data indicates id be waaaay pressing my luck and i'd rather not count on rebuilding the drive or god forbid more failures to the point i cant cover it with parity - if I had forewarning and didnt take advantage.

trust me, simultaneously watching for sales just not for the biggest drives as the larger the drive the less value for me atm unless the pricing was the same, then id just be wasting the space i guess as it would be unusable beyond 10tb.

digressing though.

seems like ~10TB is that weird spot where nobody is buying anymore, theyre all going larger - yet the manufacturers havent gotten the memo and lowered the price.

at 8tb the price drops off like 50 bucks, but so does the performance as theyre generally 5400rpm SMR drives at that point.
