Really weird issue I got in today at my shop.
A person brought in their computer, built by some OEM that does custom system, apparently owned by a 16 year kid who's pretty smart on computers and has upgrade the system to a 6800GT AGP card. Its a EVGA and has the standard cooler on it, and it seems to be playing games correctly and all and has no issues, but he was concerned about the temperature readings he's been getting.
So I plugged in the system and booted it up, I brought up the Nvidia drivers and took a look at the temps, reading 65C while idle. Well I thought that isnt to bad considering how hot it is in my office, but I put RTHDRBL on the computer to get a gauge of the load temps, we're talking 106C at max load after only 10 minutes.
So, after going to the bathroom and cleaning my pants, I wanted to take a better look around and opened up the case. His wire job was decent, seen better seen worse, so I didnt really see any airflow issues. So ran RTHDRBL with the side panel off and a floor fan by the side, major airflow, was expecting much much lower temps, but nope. Showed 101C at load and 59C at idle. From there I procedded to take off the heatsink, reapplied some AS5. Didnt help at all. So, me being super confused on what's going on, I took a Nv Silencer (my own) and put it on the card. Now it was showing 98C at load, 59C still at idle.
After all of this and using a known good cooler, and inspecting everything I can think of, could this simply be that the card is reading the temp wrong? Rivatuner and Everest show the same temps too.
No clue what's the issue here....
