Wrong E6300 Speed??

Hey,

I got my new processor today, got it all installed everything booted up great. Temps are at 22 C. When I goto into CPU-Z however it shows my frequency as 1600 MHZ rather than 1830 MHZ. The BIOS shows it as having the right multiplier so I don't know what is going on. Any ideas?
 
Your CPU automatically clocks the multiplier down to x6 (lowest I think) when you are idling, that's what is going on. You can disable it in BIOS if you want to although I cannot remember what it's called right now...

Simply set your windows power management settings to home, or something other than minimal power management and speedstep will stop.

Why disable it? It is keeping your processor cooler and keeping your power bill lower.

It makes no appreciable difference in performance and allows the CPU to last longer.

In theory, perhaps. On my P5B Deluxe having SpeedStep enabled makes absolutely no difference. Power consumption as measured with a Kill-a-Watt meter at the plug shows the exact same thing. If there is no difference in power being consumed then there is also no difference in heat being generated. My E6400 runs at the exact same idle temperature with SpeedStep enabled or disabled.
