Ok Im really ticked off now. I'm in florida and we just had a hurricane and i just got home yesterday and we had no power. Today we got it back so I fired up my PC. But now unfournately winxp installs a new driver for my dam dvd-rom and now it wont read ANYTHING!! Its a Sony DDU1612 and the driver winxp installed for no reason was some SNNX DDU0602 or something and it screwed me..Help

Control Panel, Device Manager, right-click the DVDROM, click remove, reboot.

Pray while Windows boots backup that it finds the DVDROM correctly.

somehow, your sony 's firmware was hosed. Get the latest

can't seem to get a firmware download. The updated won't update because it thinks I have that SNNX crap

Do you have an older rig? drop the drive in a win98 machine and try it. You can force it in 98 i believe

And getting a new on is good advice , Sonys are wierd sometimes. I know i will never buy another.

Asus and Pioneer forever at this point

my rig is new...winxp, athlon 2800, 512mb, 5900XT agp 8x etc..planned on getting new soundcard and speakers before the dvd-rom...its only months old

are you guys positive buying a new drive will solve the problem?

Boioioioioioioing. 2 ideas just popped into my head.

Try the driver rollback. See where that gets you.

You could also try using system restore to go back like a week or so.

already tried those ideas still not good. Might just buy the ASUS DVD-rom from newegg or something

Well when it comes to compatibility and reliability , you cant go wrong with ASUS drives

is there any benefits of these different brands? Software,Speed, Noise, etc.

Lite on is a good brand , the ASUS is even better. They are realy pioneers with better firmware

Last time I checked, LiteOn was their own brand...not a rebadged drive. In terms of price/quality, there's nothing better than LiteOn. I've used several Asus optical drives, and thought they were all crap...same with Sony. Stick with LiteOn...it's a tried and true favorite.

last time i heard the LiteOn's were noisy and i sho don want that

The 5 various LiteOn drives I have in use beg to differ.

NO on Artec. Bought that cheapie for my wife's system, where she used it to watch dvds while doing filing and working out (home office/gym). After a few months it started skipping and locking.

Turns out it was heat related, but a Lite-on replacement drive in the same system has NO issues. The artec is working fine in another system, though its not getting nearly as heavy use.

Lite-Ons do tend to have a "sandy" sound as they start spinning, but once spun up are quiet enough. No high speed optical drive is going to be truly quiet.

dam i want a quieter one then my sony. (very loud CHHHH when disc is inserted)

ps. wuts up with this site not responding?

the liteon looks exactly like my sony...and I hate the sand noise..what about Samsung?

I just put a Samsung CD burner in a system I just repaired. I was amazed at how quiet the tray was openning and closing. It just seemed very smooth, like glass.

The disc spin-up was quiet, too.

One more thing..can i leave the old one in and put the new one under it? Cuz I can't seem to yank the thing out even with the screws on both sides out...
