Here's my setup;

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
AMD 64 3500+
1 Gig corsair XMS pro series, extra low latency DDR400
10k RPM 74gb Raptor
GeForce 6800 GT
Lite-on DVD ROM, Lite-on DVD RW (dual layer)
530w Forton Source PSU
Silver Cooler Master, Wave Master, w/ side window

Thats about it. Its running great and I'm really excited. However, I'd like to make sure everything is up to date. I haven't run windows update yet, according to what I've seen, I should stay clear of SP2, correct? Also, what other updates do I need? I got the latest forceware for my gfx card, but thats about it. I don't know much about motherboard firmware and that kind of stuff, so if someone can steer me in the right direction of hardware updates I need for my stuff, I would really appreciate it.

Also, if there are any settings I should set in the Bios, please let me know. Not really sure what should be changed for the system. Thanks a ton guys, for helping me from start to finish! :D

Install a firewall and an antivirus first because "one second you're fine and the other BAM! Herpes."

^ LoL love the Family Guy reference :p

There is no reason not to update to SP2 unless you have apps that aren't compatible with it.

Congrats on the new build! Sweet rig you have there.

Service packs 2's security stuff is not at all invasive. Microsoft is just trying to get the average moron who doesn't know what antivirus software is to realize that they need to do something to keep their computers running well. The monitors are easily turned off and will never bother you again if you disable them.

If I ran a company that got as many tech-support calls about viruses as I'm sure Microsoft does, I'd take steps to alleviate the situation as well.

No, you don't really "need " to. If all is running smoothly as is, then you don't need to.
However, if you "want" to, it's up to you.

Another vote here for you to protect your box : Anti-virus, ad aware, spybot, you can get find "free" versions of all. General Software I believe has a list for you.

Another vote for SP2.

Have fun and congrats :D

For maximum compatibility and stability you should update your BIOS.

Then again, the gentleman is correct about the bios for the reasons he stated in his

quote ;)

Yeah I of course have Ad-aware and system works. I brought home my dad's software book from his local office but I think someone took all the Norton System Works out. Gonna have to go back to the office and get a copy I guess.

I would avoid Norton Systemworks, it's a real system hog. Just find yourself antivirus, a firewall, ad-aware, spybot, and the google toolbar.

After those programs are all up and running, you should be good to go without getting clogged full of junk from the net.

Hmm, thanks for the info. I'll see, are there any good free anti virus programs by any chance? As for the google tool bar, I of course have it, but I've noticed its effectiveness has been reduced as of late.

actually its for the average moron that thinks AntiVirus software is all that they need :p

of course neither is the case
there is no substituting actually locking down the OS, keeping it patched, and a layered defense of security aps, and careful selection of the historically vulnerable aps (email, browser)

Please stay away from Norton SystemHog..err I mean SystemWorks. A bunch of unneccessary crap.

Here is an array of free and very popular software:

1): AVG anti virus. Uses little in the way of system resources and is very effective. You can find it here.

2): Spybot& Adaware. (You said you already have Adaware). They both compliment each other in finding things one may not.

3): Hijackthis

4): Zone Alarm. Very simple and intuitive interface. Not only lets you see what's trying to come in but what's going out. If you have broadband and don't have a "hardware" firewall then do NOT neglect a software firewall for your system.

As was mentioned I wouldn't even bother with SP2.
