WP8 (native code and DirectX)

Yup, this will be a huge incentive to write WinRT apps - same code will run on the desktop, Surface and WP8. No other company is even close to this kind of thing. Writing iOS and Android apps is a huge pain in comparison.

quite honestly they are going to be hard pressed to selll windows phones...since they elimiated upgrades for the people who bought windows 7.5 phones..which they are still selling.

Honestly, the only advantage they have is a foothold in the desktop/laptop market. But other than that, what do they have?

Another question - will people use Metro apps vs. traditional desktop apps when the time comes? Honestly, everything I need to do on a computer can be pretty much done in Chrome, VNC, VLC, explorer and a couple of other apps that are only really useful in the desktop environment. I can't really think of a "metro" app version of any program I use now that excites me.

Uh, phones that shipped with 7.5 are getting updated, it's just not the same update. I'm looking forward to updating my 1st-gen Samsung Focus to WP 7.8

It's not like 7.5 is "it," they're still supporting the old codebase.

As I suspected, no migration from Lumia 800/900 to WP8.... guess whoever bought now the phone is screwed. Also noone will buy WP 7.5 device now, knowing that upgrade to 8 is impossible. Nokia might be "grateful" for that.

What makes you think the first gen focus is getting an upgrade? MS said current gen devices would get a 7.8 upgrades, not the first gen.

I've never really looked into WP before the announcement yesterday as far as development goes. Is it as easy to develop and deploy as Android? I love that with Android you don't have to rely on a clunky emulator to test things, you can slap it on an actual device within moments of building the apk and install it. iOS is severely retarded in that aspect and it makes me wonder why there is such high developer support for a completely locked down system.

I also question the validity of that part of the presentation, they only told us it would be "simple" to modify the code to run on phones but didn't describe what those changes were. Might be more hassle then they let on when the SDK gets out in the wild..

IMO WP dev tools look great and promising. I haven't tested it though but many seem to like them.

Who is everyone kidding? By the time WP8 is in the channel and actually availabe, most people will be looking to upgrade their Lumia anyways. How the heck are these people "screwed"? Updates will still be coming to the older phones, just not the new kernel.

I love my Titan to death, but know that by this time next year I'll be in the market for a newer phone.

Um the Lumia 900 is only a few months old, there's basically no software upgrade path for them, which would be fine if not for that fact that new apps written in native code for W8 will not work for W7.8. So yea, they're going to be stuck with a device with no future for at least another year and a half, much like the N9 ironically

MS must want Nokia to go out of business

I purchased my Lumia 900 because I wanted an upgrade for the LG Quantum I was using. It was well worth it for me since I don't game on my phone. I text, make calls, surf a bit, and listen to music. For me it won't be a big deal not getting WP8. For others it might be a big deal. I'm hoping Nokia or MS step up and work with the cell providers to allow early upgrades of hardware for early adopters.

Only way that will work is if MS buys you out of your contract or gives phones away for free. Who knows, there might be so few Windows Phones out there that this might actually be feasible.

The biggest question and possible loss for current Windows Phone owners is if the Windows 8 market is compatible with Windows 7 phones. From what I've seen, all the Metro apps on the store are for Windows 8 only.
