WoW performance

I have seen a decrease in the performance of my system while playing WoW. I have cleaned up my files, defragged, streamlined my add-ons and it just sucks. My FPS sits in the teens whether Im in a town or out on empty plains...

Any ideas

Its a combo of 2 things. The new shadows and they doubled the draw distance. It brings a lot of systems to their knees. I have to turn shadows back to low and draw distance to 1/2 (back to the old draw distance) or I get the same results as you.

The new shadows are the biggest GPU cruncher, crank em down to get back to decent framerates, my old 7800GTX can't handle shadows at max but does fine at double draw distance.

i have a 4850 and have the draw distance maxed and i do fine @ 1680 x 1050, so think it is def the new shadows, will check tonight once i get home

Same here the draw distace doesnt matter much but those shadows kill my fps...I had to lower the shadows down almost all the way.

Im still using a 7950gx2 so my card is a tad bit outdated. Picking up a 4850 this weekend hopefully my 4400x2 wont hold it back and I can enjoy some of the new shadows.

Even my current system (in my sig) takes a bit of a dip with all the new stuff turned up. So it's not you, it's WoW.

What sucks is it actually doesn't make TBC look much (if at all) better. It does do a bit for WOTLK beta though, but still, considering the performance hit to all these long time subscribers... it wasn't really worth it. There is apparently a bit of overhead involved even if you have the new stuff turned down.

Yeah, guess im gonna be asking Santa for a GTX 260 16 for christmas after my system is built next week. Its pretty bad if I can't run WoW at full crank settings anymore.

Hmm yes and not, got to a forested area during daylight and crank the shadow settings from low to max and you'll see a definite difference. Wether its worth the performance hit is up to you though. Blizzard never said they were doing a major graphics overhaul anyway beyond the new expansion area and shadows

No matter how low I turned my graphics down I was experiencing crazy lag in raid situations, shadows completely off, draw distance nearly 0, spell effects very low, etc.

I switched from 'software sound' to 'hardware sound' and that fixed the problem.

Give it a try if you're set to software sound

On my particular rig, with everything cranked up, WoW every so rarely drops to just under 40fps when running around outside in a busy area. (1920x1200, 2xAA.) Usually it fluctuates between about 45fps and 60fps (tending to hover in the mid-50s), mostly when flying. I think I'm going to give it a whirl at 4xAA just to see what happens...

Trying to find a new server anyone willing to start up a [H]ard guild??

my 8800gt plays 1650x1050 (no aa or anything) but full everything and it stays in the 40-60 range. I have noticed a dip since the patch though... i used to be constant 60 for almost everywhere except shat and in AOE's in raids

That sucks, I was considering a upgrade to a 4850 from my slightly OCed 3850. I have to run the shadow at 50% to get the fps to stay above 40, everything else is maxed. I never see it drop below 30 since i made that change tho. Im at 16x10 also.

have you tried to OC that 4850? might help a bit.

edit:
Nevermind, I thought you where the OP. do you have teh Shadows maxed?

if you're having trouble with dynamic shadows, fiddle with the detail setting of them

http://www.wowwiki.com/ExtShadowQuality

have a 4400+ X2 and 4870 and my PC didn't take much of a FPS hit with a extShadowQuality 1 setting, but the FPS was still less than it was in TBC due to view distance

weird....i have max AA and AF forced through my nvidia control panel, and i have the new shadows and the draw distance turned up all the way. i generally stay between 50-70 fps even in shatt. granted im only playing at 1440x900, so id assume that's a big reason as to why my 8800gt seems to be handling it just fine.

if my new computer can't run wow with the full settings i'm going to cry.... i only bought it so i could finally like enjoy some graphical stuff, instead of running while looking at the ground the whole time
