i just heard that the 5900XT pwned the 9600xt but not in shadeing lol. my question is, Is the 5900SE worth a try?

My new 5900XT should be here in about a hour. That is when FedEx comes most of the time anyway when I order something.
I got the MSI one in my Sig from newegg for $185. If you read some reviews the MSI card is a great overclocker and if you add some ram sinks on it it even does better.

If you go to http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html
And read the bench marks you will see how the 5900XT ranks against the other top line cards.
On average it runs at about the same speed as the ATI 9800 and 5800U. Sometimes a Little lower and some a little higher. Not to bad for a $185 card.
People keep comparing it to the 9600XT and it is not even in the same class really. Now the 5700U and 9600XT are in the same group but the 5900XT I would say is in the same class as the 5959 and 9800 group. Now the 5900XT would be the low of the class but is still in the class with them.

I am sure anyone who gives it a try will be more than happy with it.
It is silly to me when people start the ATI against the NVIDIA stuff. Both brands have their good and bad points. What everyone has to do is figure out what they want to spend and then compare the cards in that price range. I myself did not want to spend any more that @200 on a new card. It was between the 9600XT, 5700U and the 5900XT for me. I picked the 5900XT because from all the reviews and everything I have read on the subject it is the best card of the 3. Sure I would have went over the $200 mark a little and got a better card. But for me this will do just fine and with the cash I saved I was able to get a few other things like a ratpad and some fans. To me anyway that just sweetened the deal enough for me to have peace of mind that I made a good decision on it.

Oh and the reason I went with MSI over some of the other brands was because from what I could find they both have a good chance of overclocking well and have a good software package that comes with them.

Pure shader ops? Not even close (9600xt by a large margin)

but as there are no games that a pure shader ops, the other factors allow the 5900xt to stay competative.

So, how is it fair to compare a non oc'd 9600xt to a oc'd 5900???
if you're talking about cpu, then that's also a rediculous statement as 300mhz (not even that much) won't make that big of a difference...and seeing as how the 5900 system is a 800fsb cpu with twice the ram...that difference becomes even smaller.

hmm ...seems biased to me...or the fact that someone just can't stand the fact that a 9600xt - the 4-pipe 128-bit card - could come close to the beloved 5900???

I posted the score simply for comparative info. take it however you want. should I post my 3dmark03 score of 4857 also?

Ok...
FX5900se > R9600XT...
Its not an opinion... Its a fact...

You cant compare a 9600xt witha 5900se....
Is the same to compare a cheese burger to a Big Mac...

Ok... 300mhz IS THAT MUCH...

And i really think that YOU can´t stand tha fact you paid almost the same as he did for a card.. .but he has +4 and +128bit....

btw... i can really beat you (if you care that much for benchs) on 3dmark03, with my Xp2000 and my FX5900se...

or, you could pay $30 more and get a 9800 pro.

how does your overclocked 5900** compare to an overclocked 9800pro?

I'm happy with my 9600XT, it comes with half-life 2 and runs everything I have at 1280x960 at over 60 FPS, even UT2003.

how does your overclocked 5900** compare to an overclocked 9800pro?

Both of them can overclock to roughly 5950 and 9800XT levels (probably even more so with a BIOS change) without too much of a problem. If they cannot reach that level they will probably both be limited by their RAM.
My Sapphire 9800 PRO runs all day at 420MHz core clock (9800XT = 412) with no artifacting, for instance.

Do you need to ask whether a 9800XT is better than a 5950?

The question for the prospective buyer is whether the much improved pixel shader performance (and superior antialising, inferior AF when nvidia doesn't force brilinear, etc.) is worth the extra $30 or so.

Assuming you have the money for either, I'd say so, provided you're smart enough to completely remove any lingering detonators on your system if you previously owned an nvidia card.

If you looked at a benchmark between a 3.15Ghz system and a 2.8Ghz system you would see a very small difference when the 2.8Ghz system has 2x the ram and a LOT more memory bandwidth, and a higher fsb.

but since you already know everything, I shouldn't have to point that out.

and btw, I paid nowhere near what a 5900 costs. I paid $147 shipped. And for your information, the 5900 is not a true 8-pipe card. It's 4x2. The 9800/9700/9500pro series are true 8-pipe cards.

and as far as you "really beating me" then go right ahead. I hope you jiz on yourself doing it. Since you seem to enjoy jumping all over someones post for no apparent reason...it outta really get it up for you to beat my score with a card that is already superior and costs more. Hell, you might even have to pass on the viagra for the night afterwards.

and to be honest, benches don't mean shit. Especially 3dmark. That's why I posted it in the first place. Don't you find it strange that there's only 462 points difference between a midrange card and an upper-midrange card???? I do. if your games play the way you're happy playing them, then that's what matters.

so go run your 3dmark, beat my score and everyone elses, cream in your pants, and call it a night.

oh, and one more thing...
Thanks for the flame, I lit a fart with it.

i am just going to point this out if you are going to play the pipes texture units game, the ati cards are 8x1, so they have a lower theoretical fill rate and can do less texture ops per pixel op, unfortunately that doesn't quite translate as well to real life performance as Nvida hoped it would.

Why do most posts end up being a verbal war between Nvidia fans and ATI fans? Both manufacturers have strong points and weak points. Nvidia seems to have a snappier 2d performance, but ATI seems to have better image quality in 2d and 3d. ATI has many driver issues compared to Nvidia, be it a chipset conflict or install problem..................whatever. I think Nvidias OGL performance is better than ATI, if on a even performance scale. ATIs performance is better per dollar all around though, since you get top notch AA and AF compared to Nvidia. The back and forth between the two companies fans in here can completely baffle someone new who is trying to make a logical choice with the funds they have. Some peoples pockets aren't as deep as others and if your mom or dad is funding your computer hobby, then please don't say a word. Go earn some money and come back and tell us how the real world is. $30.00 savings to some people means alot. May mean you can eat during the week.

All I have to say is you rule AlbinoGibbon. You rule. Fanboys piss me off to sometimes.. Only you actually tell them off.. lol

the original topic of this thread was a comparison between ati and nvidia. but in anycase thanks AlbinoGibbon for making it clear and simple.

I understand what the post was about, but it always gets into a bashing event. Blah, blah 3dmark scores, blah, blah, kiss my hole, blah, blah, you are overclocked, blah, blah, can yours perform in DX9?, blah, blah, my card kicks your cards ass, blah, blah, spend a little more money and, blah, blah. Sorry, but it gets old after a while. Reasonable responses are cool. Even pointing out things each card does better is cool, so somebody can make a good and logical choice on their purchase. That's not what usually happens though.

What do you mean? DVD playback? In 2d I can't really tell the difference between the cards, other than a SLIGHT difference in quality for ATi (comparing a 9700pro to a GF4 4600). Well, I prefer ATi color rendition too, at least on a quality monitor. On crappy monitors nvidia's digital vibrance is a real help.

anyone ever tried ATI's "colorfill" option? I haven't noticed a difference when it's enabled. Supposed to be for 3d mode only I thought though....but even still, none of my games seemed to be effected.
