well i was browsing on anandtech and i saw the Pentium M review. i was it total shock that the Pentium M at 2.5ghz beats the FX-55 in Doom 3. but only by a small margine. well guys, it looks like i dont need a 3.73EE anymore :) , or FX-55 :p ill just get a Pentium M.
 
Might want to wait until a little better (and less expensive) platform hits the mainstream desktop market for it.

well i dont think the Pentium M is expensive at all. only 235 at newegg for like 1.7ghz one. plus the FX55 is like 850, and the 3.73EE is 1,065. so the the pentium M aint that expensive for its better perfomance between the 2 i listed.

$235 for 1.7ghz. that's a different pentium m than your first post.
 
the only board i've seen so far that supports a 479 pin processor only has an agp 4x slot; although asus is supposed to have a 478/479 adapter, but i think there are compatibility issues that need to be resolved first

Haha 235 for a 1.7 ghz. Ohh ohh it's 180 for a 3000+ ... but wait it got up to 850 for a FX55. Any idea how much a 2.5 ghz pentium M would cost?? :eek:

Well damn, I just read the anandtech review. The 2.13 performs lower than the FX55 and other AMD CPU's. Only when it was overclocked to 2.56 did it barely beat the FX55 and that aws ONLY in Doom3. (by like <1 fps). Now put that kidn of OC on the FX55 and see how it does.
 
The Pentium M certainly isn't the most cost-effective platform right now--I can tell you from experience. The CPUs being more expensive is one thing, but the motherboards are another inhibitor for the budget-minded individual. I paid $325 for my motherboard :eek:
 
It is not cost effective... YET.I am sure it will become more affordable in the future.
 
As long as the only "Pentium M" option is the Pentium M, I really doubt that. What I mean is that Intel will have to release a derivative that is specifically intended for the desktop, or some cheaper Celeron Ms at least. Motherboards will follow, but only after processors get cheaper. No motherboard manufacturer is willing to risk a mass-produced PCB design (and associated development time/money) for a processor of questionable appeal and viability.
 
With the Asus 478 to 479 adapter you can fix that problem. You can use any Asus Pentium 4 socket 478 motherboard with it.

Theres a cheap mobo solution that gets rid of the downsides of the platform. Now theres just the fact that the CPU's remain costly for the higher speed ones.
 
You can bet that adapter will be expensive, considering the past history of socket adapters for CPUs.
 
The adapter has already been announced to be under 50 USD.

With the Mobo at 98$, and the Adapter say at 49$ that = less than 150$ for the "Motherboard"

Not too expensive ;)
 
pentium M's will be getting price cuts by July; about 209$ for a 1.7 and something like 450 for the top of the range ones.
 
I will certainly consider getting one, if I can get equal performance as a 3.4-3.6Ghz processor and with a much quieter and cooler machine.

I'm kinda getting tired of the wind mill next my legs.

In fact, I've been considering selling my main system. (- the raptor) and getting another shuttle system. Probably the 775pin, 875 chipset based one. Maybe a 939 system (if I can drop a dual processor chip in there later), b/c I like the smoothness of Hyperthreading.

I don't know about that. I sold plenty of adapters for $20. I think that's pretty cheap. I'm referring to slot1 to socket 370 and slot a to socket a adapters of course. If you can squeeze that kind of performance out of the Pentium M, even twice that amount for an adapter would be well worth it in my eyes. Especially taking into consideration, like a poster has already stated, that the EE CPUs are astronomically priced at the moment.

Have you ever spent $600 on a CPU? I have. It has struck me that these things are really cheap by comparison when you consider the type of performance you are getting out of them. Shining up an A64 in Doom 3 is pretty impressive for a few hundred dollars, don't you think? I'm amused anyways. :)
