I had been using my HD580s simply powered by my soundcard (Audigy2 ZS) for a while now, and while I knew I wasn't getting the full quality these cans are capable of, I figured it wasn't too bad since I don't listen to my music very loud. Nonetheless, my dad bought me a cheap little headphone amp for Christmas, and I'm amazed at the difference. If you have a pair of these guys or similar headphones and are running without an amp, shell out the money for one, even just the cheap one I have makes a huge difference.

I was aware of course that they were much better with an amp, but most of the stuff I read said they weren't the hardest to drive headphones, and as such were pretty good even coming directly from the soundcard. They sounded great that way until I got an amp and realized what I was missing.
 
I'm in the middle of building (well, built, but troubleshooting) a CMoy amp that I found from headfi and hopefully it will give me what you've achieved. I'm using Alessandro headphones (modified Grados) so they don't really need the power like the Sennheisers but it can't hurt :D
 
Normally headphones will benefit from an amp even if they do not have the power requirement
 
Deadlierchair: you got that backwards.
High Z cans take less power to drive then LowZ cans do. ;)

That is why a Cmoy is not a good match for Grados...unless you it has buffered outputs (or a high current opamp but those tend to suck)
 
OH I SOOO love forum "Cross Overs." ;) They remind me of the comic crossovers where Spidey would "guest" on a new teen hero book. I was younger.

I finally picked up a Revo 5.1 by M-Audio and now I'm eye-balling the Go and Classic Vibes to power the Beyer 770's. The card has a seperate headphone out in addition to the 3 analog outs for 5.1...no more switching jacks or mini splitters for me!
