hi all,

about to build a budget gaming rig, and im pretty clueless, as i, personally always build mid to high end rigs. this game is strictly for playing WoW.

*prefer that all parts are available on newegg*

Total Budget: $800 (Firm)

-Case
-PSU
-Optical drive
-Mobo
-Video
-Memory
-Hard Drive

Thanks in advance!

I ran wow on an ATI Radeon 9250 so you can pretty much determine you don't have to spend much on that to play wow decently. If you want a decent upgradable rig you can get a few of these components:

MSI K9N Platinum SLI http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130049 - 104.99
X2 3800+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103562 - $175
7600gt - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130062 129 (109 AR)
1gb corsair value - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145568 $119
antec smartpower 500 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103937 (59.99)
80gb seagate/wd hd - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144102 (41.99)
Oh---dvd/cd burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106019 30.99
case- Lian Li PC-65 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811112024 $109
Total: $768.97 before rebate/shipping.

A few notes...you COULD get a cheaper case but with this it'll be sexy and last a long time. Plus its a very nice case to work with. You could probably get a better HD for a few bucks more but if your only playing wow...it shouldn't matter. The reason I put the MSI plat is so if you wanted to upgrade you could get another 7600GT.

My friends play WoW w/ onboard graphics and old computers -- in other words you could get much less of a PC for WoW.

I think thats a great setup it will run wow fine but ya you will wanna get another gig later.

If it's strictly for WoW:

Athlon 64 3200+ (don't need dual core for that game) $70

GIGABYTE GA-K8NF-9 NF4 motherboard (same goes for SLI) - ~$70

GSKILL Value 2gb kit (1gb x 2) - $210

Antec NSK 4400 ATX Mini Tower Computer Case w/ 380W Power Supply - $70

SAPPHIRE Radeon X850XT PE 256MB GDDR3 $120
or BFG Tech BFGR76256GTOCE Geforce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 - $143
Note: Personally, I'd got for the X850XTPE, since WoW doesn't require SM3.0 support and the X850XTPE will give you better performance at a better price. However, if you want to be futureproof for SM3.0 or just have a preference for nvidia, the 7600GT is a good card.

Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $55
LG 16X DVD±R Super-Multi DVD Burner - $30

$625 X850XT PE
or
$650 7600GT

that leaves you $150 for shipping, keyboard+mouse, maybe some quieter or more effective cooling, headphones or speakers..

I'd go with this for a WoW box. The game isn't that graphic intensive. Although, I'm also in the camp that would just stay away from WoW anyway. :D

I agree.

That's the most important part. Get 2 gigs or you will start to chug when you're in Ironforge or Nef/similar encounter.

i have 768ram and my comp doesn't lag in IF or origmmar. Only get lag delays on weekend nights when visiting the auction houses but that's only for 3-4 seconds and everything runs back to 40-45 FPS after all the characters and stuff is loaded. 50-75 FPS outside and about 40-45 FPS in major cities. I play on a highly populated pvp server with max settings @ 1280x1024.

I figured the "right" amount of ram to run WoW is about 512-768 ram. I also have a comp with 384 ram and another with 512. Both play at a decent fps. 2 gigs might be overkill unless you're planning to play BF2 or some other spec intensive game.

I agree for the most part. I never had issues with 1gb of ram.

However, I don't know what expansion packs or w/e will be coming out in the future, and with Vista just around the corner I recommended 2gb just to play it safe.

Obviously 1gb could be taken off and that would give around $100 to put elsewhere, maybe on a better video card. With around $250 to spend, one of those x1900xt 256mb cards would be a wise choice.

Also jumping on the 2gb bandwagon.

There are a lot of areas in the higher levels where choppy play = death.

You will be much happier with 2gb where this game is concerned.

Agreed 1 gb wasn't enough for me & I still get choppy play sometimes and checking my mem usage was over 1gb+

The amount of RAM you're going to need will be directly proportional to the population of the server.

for a young server with low/med population, 512-768 should be fine.

for a mature/high population or full server, 1024 is the BARE minimum.
