IRVINE, Calif. – January 11, 2007 – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft®, its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is now played by more than 8 million gamers around the world. World of Warcraft has also achieved new regional subscriber milestones, with more than 2 million players in North America, more than 1.5 million players in Europe, and more than 3.5 million players in China.

Keep in mind the expansion is slated for this coming Tuesday.

I like the 3.5 million in China part...I wonder who has those accounts...

So, where are the other 1 million, are they illegitimate accounts running on non blizzard servers.

Just from the Euro and NA subscribers they are getting 40 million € per month....
Considering the amount of support you get I wonder how much cake they eat at the offices :D

huhhhhh? I'm guessing the rest are most likely other parts of the world, including the rest of Asia, Australia, and other miscellaneous countries.

But really, wow... that's a lot of players (and farmers)!

I'm guessing: Everywhere else?

I'm sure there are a few players between Australia , Japan, Korea, South America, the Middle East, Africa and, erm, other places.

I'm pretty sure I saw something on TV recently, like on Discovery Times, or CNN Presents, where they showed these "virtual" sweatshops in China. These nondiscript buildings, filling with computers and young Chinese men "playing" WoW non-stop day in and day out. They were professional gold farmers, and they lived, ate, and worked all in the same building. Their gold was sold to large gold brokers in the West for sale on eBay and other sites.

So nearly half (O.K., maybe a third) of the WoW population are virtual gold farmers?

The information you saw on gold farming sweat shops is a true matter. I'm sure none of us can verify any numbers, but anytime you buy gold, chances are you are supporting a sweat shop of sorts.

Didn't Blizzard just add a clause to the EULA that makes it against there agreement if you are outside their supported regions.

Oi...yenno its been months since I've last played and I'm glad I quit..

..but I still get the sudden urge to play every once in awhile...its horrible..i almost want to buy it again :(

Wow is fucken crack.

Virtual gold mining in a sweat shop. That just exceeded my WTF-meter. It's scary sad and wrong on so many levels.

I quit two years ago when I went off to grad-school... but having graduated last month and now being back at work, I just signed up again today! (much to my wife's chagrin ;-)

I personally just have a lot of fun playing the game. I usually play by myself with impromptu groupings and just don't take it very seriously (maybe 10 hours a week max).

8 million people is quite a lot! I hope the expansion turns out well for them (and me!)...

To prevent extreme thread-derailment, im going to hold back on a few questions and comments.

Seems so much has changed in the past 10 years, well... same ideas, but better hardware and software. The issues with this many people gaming online, Ive been wondering about how it will affect advertising and laws.

8 million people... I had no idea WoW had so many fans .
