so is sli worth it in wow now?

or is it like before where it would only be 50% for each card at the most.

I can't cite any exact numbers of benchies off the top of my head but I'm fairly certain that WoW is more well-optimized now for multi-GPU setups than it was before.

I wouldn't say that SLi is "worth it" for WoW (i.e. if you don't already have an SLi setup, don't get one JUST for WoW), but it is better optimized now, and will come in handy with all the new graphical goodies that came with Cataclysm.

i run a single 4890 and im still maxing the game out even with the new goodies. I dont run Shadows so I keep them on Low (Shadows are Poorly done in WoW as it is) but I dont see anyone needs SLI for WoW at all. Its really not worth it.

Really? I actually like the shadows...after 6 years of the standard "dot shadow" underneath every character and NPC, it's nice to have dynamic shadows in the game.

Oh yeah it is way better then before but it still doesnt look right to me. Maybe im just so used to playing without Shadows that when I use them its off to me. I just think the Engine needs a major "OverHaul as it is". Id like to see WoW's Graphics boosted alot more. They did Great with the water I will give them that.

Well since Direct X 11 for WoW improved frame rates I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if you are planning to buy an SLI setup just for WoW you'll likely be wasting your money and would be far better off with the fastest CPU you can afford , single fast video card and a SSD to run WoW off of.

I realize that the OP already has a fast CPU I mean my advice just in general.

oh & if you already dont know this. To do this, expand a shortcut to the woW.exe with "-d3d11"

Directx 11 gives a big boost in FPS. I wish I had a dx11 capable card so im fudged there

Well im getting a new video card. so didnt know if i should get a 580gtx or just get 2 570's

Oh yeah, definitely; the water looks downright amazing. I've been itching for them to re-do the graphics as a whole for awhile but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Blizzard wants to maximize profits by appealing to as broad of a playerbase as possible, and (unfortunately for [H] folks) that includes people with relatively prehistoric computers that would not be capable of handling the game should the graphics be improve too much.

Race models in particular bug me. Save for BEs, Draenei, Goblins, and Worgen, the player models look pretty "bleh" compared to some of the more recent models we've seen such as Tirion Fordring's WotLK model and some of the newer NPCs. Orcs are way too small altogether; lore-wise, they are supposed to be around 7-8 feet tall (some may be shorter, but most are around that size) whereas Humans typically do not grow taller than 6'6" (again, in terms of Warcraft lore). In-game, however, Orcs and Humans are almost the exact same height, something which has irked me for awhile.

I'd be happy if they just increase the poly count for some of the old models, though. Asking for a complete overhaul with new animations and all may be too much work, but if we can get increased poly count, that'd be awesome.

If i had the money I would run SLI 570's Myself.

You know what I hate about WoW sorry to Stray off the OPs topic is the Grass. Have you ever stared at it for along time? ever noticed that it all Sways the same way & the same time :) Annoying.

Nah, the treetops are worse...they're all square-ish!

yeah, I dont think wow really has the erm, capability to take advantage in any meaningful way of any modern, even mid range cards in sli. Not worth it imo save your self money.

I have 2 480's in Sli running running on Nvidia Surround DX11 mode. My resolutions is 3240 x 1920 and I average around 120 fps everything set on ultra. In SW where I see tons of people running around I have seen it drop to 52. In dungeons, never saw it drop under 75. Hope that can help you in a way.

Filter,

It's worth it. Has been for about a year. Halfway through the WotLK expansion Blizzard implemented a graphics update and shortly after that they patched in SLI improvements. At the time I had been running WoW with a gtx295 so I was capable of benefiting from the SLI enhancements. Places with a lot of detail, like Grizzly Hills, where the forrested areas would drop my framerate to around 30-40fps @ 1920x1080 4xAA/16AF w/everything on max, after the SLI patch it stayed pegged at 60fps with V-sync on. \

If you look at your Afterburner graphs or turn on the SLI utilization bars while you're in WoW you'll see both cards utilizing exactly 50/50 workload now, whereas before it was about 90/10.

Just don't confuse the CPU limited areas with graphically intensive areas. If you're sitting in town (the new Orgrimmar for example) and there's 100-200 people standing around in front of you, it's still going to slow down due to the huge CPU load that generates. There's really no way around that. But you'll definately get a nice boost from SLI in WoW these days.

It does seem to give a big boost, but only to certain things. Where I've noticed an improvement going from DX9 to 11 is with water rendering and shadows. It doesn't impact performance as much in DX11 mode, which is nice. A lot of the other stuff it doesn't seem to make any difference, which is to be expected since a lot of the areas haven't been updated with new graphic effects.

I'm running wow at 1920x1200, Ultra settings on a 470GTX. Everything is super smooth, everywhere. Even the SW Trade district is pretty good, hovering around 30fps; most other places are well above 60.

I figure SLI would only benefit those with older cards or people who want very very wide screen and higher resolutions.

i decided to pick u a 580gtx. if i need to ill grab another one.

a GTX 580 is extreme overkill for WoW lol I hope your planning on playing more games then that lol

you Def dont need SLI 580s for WoW.

im not one of those people who like to play at minimal settings and get crappy framerate.

i swear we had this one guy who would get 1fps when we do mass pulls in nax.
