I was just playing bad company 2 and my i7 reached almost 100° Celsius on stock fan.So no gaming on stock fan? :/
Guess i could fuck up the cpu so quit gaming and everything went down to 60-70 ish. I got one extra fan and good case but this doesn't help i guess.

I should add the pc has been on since yesterday.
Was this to be expected ?

check the heatsink is seated correctly, that doesnt sound right. is it overclocked?

Heatsink isn't mounted right or clocks/voltages are messed in BIOS. Reset bios and reseat heatsink, make sure to use paste.

its the stock HSF and shitty case airflow, I've hitting 100 many many times with my i7 920 with the stock HSF

The stock heatsink can be very difficult to get to sit correctly. I know I had problems until I got an aftermarket cooler which worked much better. Put your hand on it - if it wobbles at all then it isn't secure. All 4 push pins may have popped, they may all look like they're in all the way, but if it can be wobbled at all then it isn't on there good. I don't know if some of the heatsinks are predestined to not sit correctly or if some motherboards just don't play nice with them.

Why are you using that paperweight as your hsf?

Time to go pick up a real hsf!

Guys, come on, something is obviously wrong if an i7 is hitting those temps. Assuming your ambient air temps are in the 70-85*F (like 20ish*C?), the heatsink that comes with an i7 is designed to keep it well below the 85-90*C that most mobo's will cutoff at.

Legitreview posted the stock Intel HSF on an i7 920 at idle 38*C / load 74*C and even *only* registered 84*C at 3.5GHz

Well, if the case has shitty airflow too, then the ambient inside the case could easily go up to 30 or 40, and there you have your 100C right there. I'm surprised it hasn't died yet.

no, an i7 can take more then 100*C, thats just the fail safe temp where the cpu throttles back to save itself :)

It won't die. It will shut down to prevent any damage at a certain temperature - likely around 100C. That's thermal throttling.

Definitely check the mounting. I've had the same issue with the stock cooler. The push pin mounting system is a POS.

Hm, check the heatsink is set right and spend $50 on a case with decent airflow...

Go buy yourself a decent CPU cooler. Fuck buying a case. You can cut air holes in a damned case. The dremel is your friend.

^agreed go buy a megahalems or a good hsf screw buying a case. Actually screw running a case, True overclockers use benchs :p

Does your case really have bad airflow, or is it just bad wire management? If you add a few fans strategically placed near vents (or even open pci slots) you can improve your airflow greatly. Check to ensure that the heatsink is seated properly, and be sure not to use too much thermal compound.

okey guys, now im back. couldnt post lately since i didnt want to start my computer without a new cooler, i couldnt post here. Anyways I bought a huge case and water cooling !! :D
Case: Corsair 800D
Cooler: Corsair H50

And man how things changed, about 30-35°c idle and 54°c under prima 95 after 10min. So everything looks as of right now, but i will probably overclock this thing, so i might need to add some fan then right?
Btw, the problem i had was that stock fan grills were damaged, it was loose and didnt sit well anymore.
Thanks for all the replys so far.

Btw, i am new to water cooling ol... will the water ever dry off or how does this thing work and how does it keep the water over a long time? YEah i dont want to read it on wiki lol, just give me a short explanation.

The OP and I should start a 100*C club. I've managed it on the stock cooler for this Q6600 I'm using. I got spooked at 102*C and backed off on the volts and clocks until I got a Corsair H50.

Heh, you brought a gun to a knife fight. :D

Water shouldn't evaporate in a closed system. Where will it go? (short explanation)

A good air cooler running prime 95 or whatever will make an I7 run hot. About 72C with my current ambient in the basement and a megahelms heatsink (3.8GHz everyday). You don't need to add anything to start overclocking.

The H50 specifically is designed to not need any user maintance within a reasonable amount of time.

Nice upgrades, your cpu should run nice and cool from here on out. The heat will increase when you overclock though so just be forewarned about that.

I second the other posts here regarding checking to see if the CPU HSF is seated correctly. Also, you may try applying your own thermal paste after cleaning off the pre-existing stuff if you have anything on hand. Also, there is a chance you are getting false readings from the built-in thermal sensor. Perhaps an infrared non-contact thermometer is in order.

EDIT:

Sorry for somehow skipping your follow-up post. Excellent choice on the Corsair H50! I have one cooling my OC'd Core 2 Quad; it was the single-most best investment I have ever made as far as cooling goes.

100% recommended.
