Would you use Opera GX?

I'm unsure what differs about your system, but like many others that isn't my experience. I'm using it right now with 14 tabs open, a significant amount of addons, and its very responsive even on my somewhat older system. I'm not sure what else is going on, but as you describe that's not a "normal" user experience.

So I went and reinstalled it on my main rig that has a fresh Windows 10 install just to make sure I wasn't crazy. It just runs so badly, it will start stuttering and feels like its dragging the whole desktop down to 5fps. The other problem is sometimes tabs or pages just fail to load, I can't tell you how many times I've had to copy the address bar and put it in Edge just to make sure the site wasn't down. I haven't had any crash (where it comes up with the report a problem dialogue) but it did lock up so hard earlier trying to load a youtube video that Explorer crashed and I had to hard reboot. I have one single extension: adblock plus, and I have 4 tabs open.

I have Edge and Chrome installed on here too and they both run perfectly fine.

I use a combination of Brave and Vivaldi. I have my Vivaldi security settings stupid restrictive, such as blocking JavaScript, so it breaks a lot of websites, which is when I fall back on Brave.

I use Vivaldi on mobile though. It's the only mobile browser I know that allows background tab loading*. Something I've gotten insanely used too.

*If I open a website from another app, including the inbuilt search, facebook, etc. It creates a new background tab on Vivaldi without switching apps or even switching to the browser. I sometimes queue up dozens of websites this way.

Seems the source of the OP's link 404s but it's hardly a secret they were bought by a Chinese group in 2016 (mainly the company that made the malware-like 360 browser) and have since been criticized for controversial predatory lending in Africa.

The Opera I once loved and evangelized for died when when they changed from Presto to Chromium anyway (not due to the engine but the complete lack of interest by the company in restoring the prior functionality). Vivaldi is the spiritual successor by the original Opera founder who left in 2010. It's not perfect but it suits my needs better than Firefox as a primary browser.

I’m kinda surprised about the lack of love for Firefox. I know Chrome is the most used browser, but that thing is still such a memory hog and I refuse to use something that is giving my data wholesale to Google through its integration of logins with the browser.

Anyway Firefox is still my long serving browser. It also has all my nice extensions and is always quick. That may be due to MacOS vs people on Windows though.

Opera? Will never switch to it. I used it for a bit a long time ago during the browser wars of the early and mid 00’s. And it did nothing for me then. It sounds like it won’t now either.

Firefox used to have incredibly rich functionality... until the Quantum update. It could virtually match Opera Presto in features—including highly specific features—with the right addons. However they dropped all support for such addons years ago and it's never reached the same heights for the feature set I used.

For standard browser functionality it's fine and I also think what they've done with native containers and anti-fingerprinting is laudable.

Just for those that don't believe me that it crashes, this is what I get 3-4 times a day. I have gmail, youtube, and [H] open, with one single extension. Oh, and this happens on every PC I use it on. I've long since went back to Edge.

That was also when I ditched firefox.

You got an Event Viewer record or a Windows minidump?

No, and I don't care about it either. I use a government issued computer 40 miles from here for nothing related to anything I do at home and it does the same thing. Hell, we still use internet explorer there and it works fine.

Clearly you do or you wouldn't keep bringing it up. Having said that, they're not always helpful, but sometimes they can help narrow down what is causing the crash. If it happens on multiple computers I'd start wondering if it was my Firefox profile (if I had one set up) being corrupted.

You misunderstood, I don't want it to crash or load tabs at the speed of smell, I want it to be as good as it used to be. I used it for years and years with no issue, this just started happening a couple of years ago. The dump file I can't be bothered with because I've seen this same crash over a wide variety of devices with no common point other than the browser being there.

Gaming browser sounds like a gimmick.

Opera itself has been involved with some scummy stuff after selling out. They were investing in predatory loans in Africa.

Chinese company offering predatory loans in developing countries? Who could have expected that?

I don't think that's normal. I've been using Firefox for a very long time now, and I don't think I can remember the last time I had an actual crash. I have a lot of extensions and often have 200-300 tabs open:

My only complaint with it is I wish that uMatrix made it a bit easier to unblock certain common things that web sites require. When I'm paying for things, I often have to switch to Brave browser temporarily to just easily allow all of the crap that they need. Although I don't know why in the world my water provider's billing portal freaking needs Facebook included, but okay.

The last time I remember using Opera was on my iPhone 3GS I think? I liked its interface the best. When I went back to android, it started falling out of favor. I used mostly Brave browser on my iPhone 8 Plus, but now I'm back to Firefox on Android.

Opera always seemed like a boutique browser that never brought anything noteworthy to the table.
it use to (in the presto days) before it was sold to the highest bidder, who turned it in to a chrome clone. :hungover:

then the people that created the original opera moved on to create vivaldi, which is what i use. you can customize every piece of the ui to have the exact browser you want. (and is the only one that i can still do ctrl+space for home page like the original opera got me hooked on) and it's stable as can be and yeah i also runs on chromium base but hey, it works, and works on linux, and quite well. a few distros like Feren even have it installed by default.

Given what I am about to tell you I bet that the answer would be a resounding NO!

I have used Opera for years and I heard about Opera GX and thought I would try it. I also decide to search what the differences between Opera and Opera GX and I found this:

The Inherent Security Risks of Opera and Opera GX: Unraveling the China Connection

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/inherent-security-risks-opera-gx-unraveling-china-griffin-d-hamell#:~:text=Opera Software, the company behind,] The New York Times).

Rather worrisome.

Stopped using it several years ago for like reasons, would never go back. I use SR Ware IRON 64bit. Stopped Brave after years, I use a smaller search engine recommended by Rob Braxman and Ed from The Outer Light. both are net security extremists.both are great folks.

The only reason that I ever ran opera was because it had an irc client built into it. The only reason that I stopped using Firefox is because Chrome was faster on my athlon 64 back in 05 or so. I still use chrome because I'm lazy.
The only time that I use Edge is to download chrome during a fresh install.

I tried running Chrome. It was Not GoodTM

I tried running Edge, too. But it's just not doing it for me. Glad it's less IE, though.

Firefox is installed, but... I generally only use it to test something I don't want to be logged in to.

Well just checked my stats with an extension -

I am using Windows 11, Firefox Developer Edition - 32 Windows Open & 1582 Tabs! - I haven't tested, but I don't think anything else can handle that.

No crashes - no slodowns - It is using about 10GB Ram - I have 64GB installed.

I have all the browsers installed and this has been the most stable so far.
