My computer is VERY loud. I think the main cuplrit is my cpu fan by far. Would getting a 80mm to 120 mm fan adapter, putting it on the cpu heatsink, then putting a 120mm case fan on top of that work out ok? (I have a 3400 clawhammer).

If you have some flexable tubing put it up to your ear and sort of work your way around the case and see if you can detect where the sound is coming from...a lot of people are quick to blame their CPU fan but also check GPU and PSU as they are common problem areas, not so common is the north bridge so try that also.

As for the CPU fan thing, yeah it should work as long as your have the same (or more) cfm you should get the same temps.
 
Those adapters are okay but from what I've heard they restrict airflow somewhat.
