I don't know much at all about how the innards of hard drives operate, but I do know there are 2 or 3 platters in them. So, would it be possible to use the three platters and make a raid5 or raid0 array out of them? I'm talking on the hardware level, so that each platter is treated as if it's it's own hard drive. With the increasing speeds of SATA I wonder if it might even be possible to use the CPU to do all the raid work. I heavily doubt it's possible to achieve that at an enthusiast level and would rather need to be implemented by one of the companies. But to me it seemed like a decent idea to increase speed and security, while keeping capacity quite large.
Anybody who knows more who'd like to further explain I'd be greatful!
