if the comp was never gonna be used for gaming, or any graphic intensive stuff, would, lets say a 1.7 ghz p4 be enough? maybe even a celeron?

lets say its just used for word processing, internet browsing, and things like that

or even, which amd would be best for this?

That's plenty good, as long as you have enough memory in it.

i set my girlfriend up with a dual p3 550@612 (katmai), she says it runs great. i dont think youll have a problem with that considering it has more than double the power of my gf's system.

if your building it from the ground up id say go with a 1-1.2ghz p3 there actually faster than a 1.7ghz p4 (willamete...yuck) and alot cheaper not to mention the fact that the compatible sdram is much cheaper than ddr ram wich you will need for the P4

Do you have a MB for it?

Make sure it fits and not 423 pin or such or system bus will work with new MB.

My Daughter has a P4 2.2 and it does Word and some light gaming just fine.

Most new MB's will not support 423 pin CPU's.
