Would this bottleneck crossfire?

hello i am going to be building a new computer soon, then i am going to be building another one later. So do you think an amd 64 3200 + would bottleneck cf with an x1900xtx ? i don't know if i will ever go with cf BUT if i do i am just wondering if it will.. thank you for taking your time to read this and i hope you have a great day

it wouldn't choke off performance but it would be another limitation .. upcoming games aren't going to get much easier on video cards , other than vendor specific optimisation (ie..operation Deep Pockets.. kaChing) look for future games to push hardware harder. As Oblivion has demonstrated that an unoptimised game can force even the mightiest of hardware to it's knees (can thank publisher deadlines and develper laziness), a slower CPU is one of the lesser things to worry about. Even at 1280x1024 (the most common resolution consumers use in the day where 17" LCDs are the norm), such giants as X-fire/SLI strive to perfrom admirably with every option enabled, every detail to it's max..

So in the end I wouldnt worry so much about your CPU speed as much as other factors (system ram, vram, 16x PCIe vs 8x PCIe, resolution, fsaa method etc)

It would reduce performance a little in games. You can easily overclock it to make it up though, and depending on the game and video settings, it may not make any difference.

Basically, the higher the resolution and more features you enable, the less impact the CPU makes and the more impact the video card makes.

So the answer is: If you want to run Quake 2 at 640x480, you will be CPU limited, but if you want to play Quake4 at 1600x1200 with 4x FSAA, the 3200 CPU will be within 3 FPS of an FX 55. (That is proven fact).

Just overclock it and you have no bottleneck.

OK, you do. Noticable at 1280*1024. :D I imagine that's not what you are getting CF for.

... even non-overclocked, there would be no "bottleneck" with a 3200+...

the 3200 + should be heavily overclockable although YMMV rules apply. But I had a 3200+ winnie that used to do about 2.8Ghz on air w a 3x ht multiplier and 2.5Ghz on air with a 4x ht multiplier.

I dont think it will bottleneck you unless you are Trying to game above 1280x1024 and if your not playing above that resolution crossfire X1900XTX is a bit overkill otherwise, Get a bigger monitor and keep that cpu clocked as high (yet stable) as you can then put a better proc in there. ;)

You should have said under 1280x1024 instead. The reason is you become CPU limited at lower resolutions where video performance doesn't matter and you become video limited at higher resolutions where video card performance really matters.\

For Crossfire, your good for high res and high levels of FSAA and don't worry about the CPU.

Yeah your right, I need to stop posting stuff at 2:30AM or later.
