Would it benefit me

Would it benefit me at all to sell my X800 Pro and get a nVidia 6800 GT? Is the 6800GT a better card than the X800? I'm starting to hear some stuff about the X800 and I'm starting not to like it, and I want another almost top-of-the-line card.

That's what everyone is telling me. I don't even know why I got this card in the first place. If either of you guys are interested I made a thread in the FS/FT forum. I'll sell it or trade for a 6800 GT plus some cash.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

Then your losing money on the deal. :( You paid $400 for it, the same cost as a 6800 GT. Now however, your trading it for a 6800 GT plus offering some cash. Just stick with it, maybe get better cooling and unlock those pipes?

I doubt it, I don't have the box anymore, just the manual, the CD, the DVI adapter, the RGB adapter, and RCA Video adapter which came with it. I might have the reciept laying around here somewhere.

I agree, X800Pro is still a great card.

Ok, well maybe I will try sticking with it.

What can I do to improve the card?

It kinda sucks to pay that much and then have to bother with unlocking pipes and have no guarantee that it will even work. Tell them you hate the card when you take it back. If its Best Buy they won't care. If they'll give you store credit then you can use it toward a 6800GT. I did that same thing once, bought a POS, took it back, got a 6800 instead.

w0w. Thats still nice. You got all of that stuff with your videocard. All I got with my pNY 6800 GT was a manual, the CD w/ drivers, and the DVI adapter. I am thinking of returning it to COMPUSA, and getting a different 6800 GT from Newegg with more "stuff" :)

Well, I'm almost tempted to try it. I'm thinking they may actually take it back, considering the amount of money my family has spent there in the past few years. We're on a first name basis with one of the salesman, and he always helps us out. I know they wouldn't want to lose my families business, so they may actually accept it back. I KNOW they would with a box, just without that box, I don't think they'd do it...

I just don't know...

They can probably do it but they might charge a restocking fee of like 15-20 dollars. If its a big company they probably sell tons of stuff so one return here or there is no biggie. They'll sell it as an "open item" and still make a decent profit.

Oh and from your sig, I'd keep the ram and get a different PSU isntead...

15% restocking fee. so If you spend $400 on it then...you would lose pay $60 :( I was thinking of getting the x800 PRO. The cooling fan looks impressive, and lately I have been wanting to try out the ATI cards.

i doubt they will take back something that is missing the box or something that is suppose to be there.

Dude, I smashed my PS1 back in the day, and Circuit City took it back after I'd owned it for two years. Gave me a new one free. I think I've done that more than once...

I agree with wickfut, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. I'd keep the card. The 6800GT is not "so much better" that you'll notice worlds of difference, and I think once you have it, you'll actually be disappointed that you had to go through the hassle and extra $$$ and didn't get that much extra performance. Unless Doom 3 is the only game you play, I'd stick with what you have.

Well, we'll see what happens. I can't return it, I just called and talked to the guy I know and he said there's no way they can do it w/o a box, which is ok, I'll let go of it another way. I might end up just keeping it.

In the mean time, I'm seeing what kind of offers I get as far as selling it and trading it.

Is there anything I can do to improve this card?

Just keep it and o/c it a little. It's not the worst card you can buy. So it wasn't the absolute best buy there is, that doesn't mean it's shit :\. I realized this after I bought mine, but then again, at the time my card was faster than the 6800GT :D.

I'm trying to OC it just a bit, with ATi tool, but it isn't working. It's artifacting at like 515/515

What's wrong?

lol. I was about to recommend taht to you. Get it, it could up your core quite a bit. I'm going to buy one as soon as I get paid. I hear it's a good cooler. 515 on the core isn't too high. Usually on ATI tool when I up the core too high it just freezes the computer. That's around 545MHz though. My memory starts artifacting ATI tool's 3d view at around 590-600MHz. In games it's around 585 after a few minutes. I just keep the memory at a safe 550MHz(1.1GHz) now with stock cooling.

Oh, I also have another question.

When I up the core and memory w/ ATi tool, how come when I put it in the sys. tray, then go play HL2/CS:S, and then exit, it's all of a sudden back to the stock speed? It's like resetting itself or something.

What do I do to fix that?

And as far as the GPU coolers go, if I do keep the X800, which of these two would be the better.

That puts you at what price for that card with the expensive cooler? Almost enough to buy a 6800 Ultra?
I already own the ATi Radeon X800 Pro.

I'm not sure about which one is better, but if you get that ATI silencer 4, buy it from newegg.com. It's about 5 bucks cheaper with 6 dollar shipping. Frozen CPU is about 36 bucks + 10-15 dollar shipping. Frozen CPU is a little overpriced. You would spend about 36 dollars on a GPU cooler at newegg as opposed to the $45+ at frozen cpu. Unless that doesn't matter to you.

Well if you can take a 40 dollar loss and get a GT instead it would be better than adding stuff onto a card you don't even want wouldn't it?

I just can't decide.

I really want the 6800 GT, yet the thought of an overclocked X800 Pro w/ new cooling system is kind of welcoming.

Does anyone want to trade?

The 6800GT is a more advanced core with better performance for the same price and more pipelines than the pro.

This is nothing but f-a-nboy bs. The only difference is the number of pipes and read my signature.

Actually I did exactly that with my old machine. I had an X800Pro and was left wanting more. I was left wanting more. With only 12 pipelines it wouldn't ever be on par with the X800XT's or the 6800GT's. Doom 3 performance was sucking hard on my X800Pro and I then got a good deal on a 6800GT and went with it. Boy was I happy. I got the 6800GT to run at Ultra speeds and I was totally happy with it.

Nothing against ATi, but I'd say that the X800Pro should be priced with the 6800NU and sold at that price point. It's not on par with the GT in anything other than price point. I saw a increase in performance in every title I played. Which even covers the so called ATi preffered titles like HL2 and CS:S.

Well, before you posted that, I was still leaning towards the 6800GT.

I think you've just made up my mind.

I just need to figure out how I'm going to do this thing.

How the F can you say that? Its a simple fact! Its core has more advanced pixel shaders, HDR lighting, 4 MORE PIPELINES... You can't really call the 800's more advanced if you just read the specs. It's clocked higher to make up for these facts no doubt, but that doesn't make the x800 on part architecturally. Not to mention that it SHOULD be priced as the 6800NU is because thats the card it's closest to architecturally. So you can read the spec sheets on www.nvidia.com and www.ati.com YOU'RE the fanb0y for disputing black and white specifications about hardware. I didn't say it couldn't match the fillrate of the GT or the fps. Ever hear about catalyst optimizations being more quality degrading than the Nvidia ones that you can turn off altogether? If you want to brute force things with high fps and sacrifice image quality like my 9800 does with the catalyst control bs that requires .net and slows things down and makes things more inconvenient. I'm not a fanb0y, I speak from experience with both companies. The Nvidia's are a lot better for 3D, so if you like the text and the images on the forum to be sharp be sure you get the ATI, if you like good quality 3D then I'd stick to Nvidia... from my experience with both.

doesnt it depend on who makes your pro? like the gigbyte version has 16 pipes and i think hte power colour oes as well..i think it has something to do w/ het VIVO function.

In the end though starting not to like your card cause of what you hear about itis kinda ridiculous. Talk about the rumour mill at work. cards are like girlfriends-- if you like the way she looks, the way she behaves and someone just told you that there was a *better* girl out there would you trade yours in?

The pixelshaders are not more advanced, they use higher precision, there's a big difference. Not only that but in alot of the instances they are used they are at lower precision than the x800 which uses only 24bit. They are slower, not a whole lot but slower than the x800's shaders.

I already said the card has more pipes and "HDR" is in fact just a driver/game thing, there is a demo using the Cry engine out right now, there was a post on this forum about it in fact that used HDR on ATI cards... So it's not a 6800 core only thing, it's just an effect.

There is nothing that the 6800 can do that the X800 can't do... It uses different ways of doing it all (because the cores are completely differently designed) however they are equivolent in engineering advancements. Thus your post and the notion that it's "more advanced" is nothing but bs.

~Adam

Even if the shader's are less precise, more heavily dependant on optimization trickery to boost fill rates, and don't support the latest shader model? They're still on the same level of advancement? Your logic escapes me with respect to them being equivalent. Even with AF forced at high levels on ATI cards, they do plenty of the scene at 2X to improve framerates. There was a great comparison between image quality on the two cards. I'll dig it up. Usually we have more advanced products coming out year after year so that we can have said image quality boosts. Right? Or am I missing the whole point of having a graphics card now LOL

I really just can't decide.

I just upped the core to 504 and the memory to 524 on mine, played in HL2 for about 10 minutes, no artifacting. Plays noticeably different than before. That's making me want to keep the card. I'm thinking of just putting a new cooling system on it and getting a new monitor. I have an LCD right now and it sucks for gaming because the refresh rates are either 60 or 70 on it, which means I cant go higher than 60-70 FPS.

I just really don't know right now, I just don't know...I want the 6800GT, but then again I want to stick with the X800 and overclock it...

Boss whatever is quite funny.
OMG ONLY 12 PIPELINES IT MUST COMPETE WITH THE 6800 NU.
haha.
It owns the 6800 NU, because its clocked at 475mhz for the core vs 325.
The 6800 gt is a bit faster, no reason to trade a card for a small increase in frame rate, and unuseable 8x mixed mode AA, though perhaps if you game at 1024 or 1152, like I so, its playable.
