With i7 out now all of the old quad core prices are dropping to some nice deals, specifically the Q9550 for $215. Currently I use an Intel E2180@3.0 Ghz with stock cooling. So, if I were to bite on one of these Q9550s, get a good heatsink/fan and overclock that thing, would it be a big enough difference for the money?

Edit: Also, would it be necessary to upgrade any other components? My build is in my sig

Your in somewhat the same boat as I am..Im waiting also for the price drops..Theres no need for me yet to go i7 when the quads can play just about any game just fine..

It would depend on whether or not your current computer can handle everything you need it to. If it does not, then you can certainly upgrade to a Q9550.

You would not need to upgrade anything, but you would need to flash your BIOS to the latest version that supports 45nm CPUs.
 
I myself went from a E2180@3GHz to a Q9550 (now at 3.8GHz) and I would never look back. I do allot of photoshop and some video work and its done wonders, depending on what you do it can be night and day.
 
A Q9550 would definitely be a significant upgrade from an E2180, especially if you overclock it to 3.8GHz or so. I would say that it's worth it if you do anything CPU-intensive with your PC.
 
Im looking at upgrading my E6850 @ 3.8ghz on water lol and the lovely 4 mb cache to a Q9550.
That 12mb cache is just to die for. I also am deciding to upgrade to 4 gb of ram 2x2 rather then my 2x1 combo im running now

Gotta save up :)
